Someone told me they solved the problem by putting a regular size mailbox within a large, rural-type mailbox and filling the space between the two with concrete. So, it looked like a large rural mailbox, but was really a reinforced bunker-type mailbox! :)

The pump don't work 'cause the vandals took the handle!---Dylan
Oh, sweet justice!

Having experienced this sort of vandalism first hand, I can really appreciate this thread. There is something very infuriating about coming out to your poor mailbox that is smashed and over by the side of the road. I moved before I did anything serious but the 1/2" armored box was about what I had in mind! They were even using fire extinguishers on mine. One was beside the road after a hit. Imagine hitting the armored box with one of those....ouch! lol

Who cares about the make of the vehicle. What kind of club fails catastrophically like that? Sadly, there will probably be a lawsuit. I'm sorry but golf clubs aren't designed to be used to whack mailboxes, particularly while in a moving vehicle.

This is inexcusable. If golf clubs were made of Nerf material, this and who knows how many other lives could
have been saved!

Well, From my superior position of intelect and as a California resident, it seems many of you are missing the point! It should be obvious to all that its time to sue the mailbox owner, the mailbox distributer, the mailbox manufacturer, the golf club distributer, and the club manufacturer. We must prevent another needless golf club death! > sarcasm off.
To: Weimdog
I suppose his family can now sue the homeowners for making the mailbox too hard--not to mention the golf club makers...
To: Gorzaloon
Well, perhaps it is a bit malicious, and I know you wouldn't want to maim someone just for trashing your mailbox.. The one with the counterbalanced swinging rod might be an illegal boobytrap. But a solid steel metal box just sounds like a reasonably practical solution to a unreasonable problem. :-)
I still like the swing rod idea, even though I don't condone it.
To: JRandomFreeper
It's time to sue the club manufacturer for knowningly producing an obviously defective product!
Still, there seems to be an old saying that comes back to mind, " For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."

So, did the baseball bats get a workout?
To: JRandomFreeper
He would not identify the make of the vehicle. If the kids had been riding in an SUV, he would have.
In fact, the title would have probably been "SUV Passenger Killed By Golf Club", or something.

No, they didn't. The shotgun was sufficient to cow our foes, and we knew the kid's dad and didn't think he deserved to be doing bodywork for the next couple of weeks because his son was stupid. To make matters worse, the dad was an old racing buddy of my Dad's. Ouch, again.

To the "concrete" matters guys:
Consider what happens to concrete and steel when liquid nitrogen (or worse, liquid oxygen) is applied in profuse quantities...of course, only careful vandals need apply.
Some folks need to remember to constrain their desire for retribution with a consideration for the innocent passerby, one who's transgression is not intentional. Road hazards will be eliminated with extreme predjudice. The details are available to anyone with a high school education (I used to say 3rd grade, but the educational system is in a bit of decline, and Encyclopaedia Britannica is no longer concerned with the nitty-gritty of how the partisans were able to give the Nazis such a difficult time).

My dad's house does sit on a curve, but since a curb-jumper in my dad's front yard has the alternatives of hitting the mailbox or going down about a 20' embankment into a creek (the road is on a causeway across a creek flood plain at that point), they would probably prefer the mailbox.
I know what you mean, but it isn't retribution. It's to keep from paying out 19.99 for a mailbox and 9 bucks for a 4 by 4 post every weekend. (Retribution is just icing on the cake. :-D )
And if you think the concrete is a bit much, there was a case this year in Atlanta where six kids stole an SUV, got some logging chains, and spent the evening wrecking BRICK mailbox pillars by dragging them down the road.
I don't have this problem (and I've never bought a second mailbox) because our box sits next to a large telephone pole. Guess they could sue the electric company if they're going for our box and hit the pole by mistake . . .
To: no-s
Oh, yeah. Forgot.
The universe of folks who have the knowledge and ability to get hold of liquid nitrogen (and the sources in Atlanta) are sufficiently limited that I'll be able to track down the perps without too much trouble.

I remember reading about a homeowner whose trash cans were being hit by an old vehicle every week for about two months. Finally he poured concrete into one and some kids ended up in the hospital and lawsuits were to follow. Please do not tell me those kids won the lawsuit!
Also exactly what did the kids sue for? After all if they did not engage in vandalism they woudl not have hit the concrete-can!
This annoys me!

It's been some time ago, but I think the home owner MAY have been charged with a crime, like setting up a dangerous trap. Any civil suit followed that and I never heard of the results. Actually, I believe the yutes were injured in the incident.

I guess this stupid behavior resulted in a hole in one.

Sooo....who gets sued first?
The owner of the mailbox, the manufacturer of the mailbox, the manufacturer of the car, the manufacturer of the golf club, the contractor that paved the road, the tire manufacturer, the gas station that gassed the boys' car up or God for creating life?
