AMERICAN LIFE LEAGUE NEWSROOM

Nancy Pelosi is not a 'conservative Catholic'; anti-life stance creates scandal within Church

"In recent media appearances, new House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has been described as a conservative Catholic," said American Life League president Judie Brown. "This disturbs me. I want her bishop to know that her public opposition to Catholic teachings is creating scandal among faithful members of the Church. It is my prayer that he will respond accordingly."

Mrs. Brown has written Archbishop William Levada of San Francisco that Rep. Pelosi (D-Calif.) is one of "many members of Congress who claim Catholicism as their creed while doing everything they can to undermine basic teachings of the Church and the Biblical principles upon which those teachings are based. And people listen to them."

Rep. Pelosi has voted repeatedly in favor of pro-abortion legislation, and has reportedly hosted representatives of the strident pro-abortion organization "Catholics for a Free Choice" in her congressional offices. "There is danger that this behavior will lead others to sin," said Mrs. Brown. "In Catholic Church terms, this is scandal."

According to Section 2284 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. The person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor's tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense."

"The Catholic hierarchy must be made aware that the public behavior of pro-abortion political figures such as Nancy Pelosi, who claim solidarity with the Catholic faith, creates an extremely dangerous situation for other Catholics," said Mrs. Brown. "It is our hope that Archbishop Levada -- and other shepherds of the Church -- will call these politicians to task for their belligerent and insistent promotion of abortion, an act which, according to Church teaching, is a grievous sin. Souls are at stake. We pray for Rep. Pelosi, that she may repent of her continued advocacy of child killing."

Do you consider Rev. Jesse Jackson & Rev. Ralph Abernathy & Rev. Al Sharpton to be "Evangelicals" -- identical to Jerry Fallwell and Pat Robertson and Franklyn Graham and politicians like G W Bush and Ashcroft?

That's what the poster that I responded to alleged.

By the way, among the candidates running for the GOP nomination in 2000, who were the most vigorous defenders of the unborn? Name two or three.

Politically -- they CAN'T defend the unborn. Votes for the Democrats (tens of millions of which are Roman Catholics) have made Roe v Wade the political third rail. Assailing it is now political suicide for national politicians.

But in the DARKNESS AND PRIVACY of the VOTING BOOTH, there is no "political correctness" or ramifications.

There is just moral conviction -- or lack thereof.

Fine: they committed political suicide. What were their names?

While you're thinking about it, name some of the strongest opponents of Roe v. Wade on the Supreme Court. Two or three will do.

If Falwell, Graham and Robertson were the only “evangelicals” out there, I might agree, but, since Schwaggart, Van Impe, Baker and the like share the airwaves with the others, I can’t say that I see your point. Especial when you take a look at someone like Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson. Your comment was telling, and not flattering.

Why are you changing the subject away from Catholic hypocricy vis-a-vis Abortion?

Abortion is now the law of the land. Only if the Democrats lose massive support will there be any possibility of it being overturned, and with even 53 per cent of "practicing Catholics" voting for them, (along with even larger numbers of "lapsed catholics") there is no chance of overcoming those numbers.

A better question to ask is: "Why do Roman Catholics strengthen the Party of Abortion with their votes when they supposedly KNOW the Pope is against abortion?"

What does Jimmy Swaggert have to do with this discussion?

Do you have a point, or are you just an Evangelical hater?

Why are you changing the subject away from Catholic hypocricy vis-a-vis Abortion?

Why aren't you answering my simple questions? Here, I'll tell you why:

Defenders of the unborn among GOP presidential candidates: Roman Catholic Alan Keyes. Among Supreme Court justices, Roman Catholic Clarence Thomas and Roman Catholic Antonin Scalia, along with (Lutheran) William Rehnquist.

Funny, the two most pro-abort justices on the Supreme Court are Jewish. If Souter and Ginsburg turned pro-life, Roe v. Wade could be overturned tomorrow. Yet all you can do is blame the Catholics, when 2/3rds of the Catholic SCOTUS justices are two of the most reliable pro-life votes on the Court.

Supreme Court Justices are nominated and CONFIRMED by President and Senate. Those are political entities.

They require VOTES to get in office.

Good try though.

You mentioned several white evangelicals (two of which I have a respect and a certain level of admiration for) as a contrast to several black scoundrels who misuse the pulpit and sully their titles. I cited Swaggert, among others, as an example of a white minister that has also misused his position with in a “Christian” organization to illustrate the fact that contrary to your assertations, black “christians”, as you put it, are not necessarily an “entirely different animal. To further support this position I even cited an example of a black conservative evangelical Christian. What kind of “animal” he in berned’s world?

Yeah, thanks, I've read the Constitution.

Now maybe you'd like to answer why you're trashing Catholics when they make up 2/3rds of the pro-life votes on the SCOTUS, and provided the most ardently pro-life GOP candidate in the last Presidential election?

Ok. Outside of the little-known Jesse Lee Peterson, name a national black preacher that is AGAINST the Party of Abortion & Homosexuality, as virtuially EVERY Evangelical Preacher is.

Um...... because they were NOMINATED AND CONFIRMED by REPUBLICANS who were EL:ECTED by the financial sacrifices and hard work of (among others) Evangelical Christians.

And these NOMINATIONS AND CONFIRMATIONS came over the heated and organized opposition of the Democrat Party that recieves so many votes and so much money from everyday rank and file Roman Catholics.

Um.... that would be my point.

Just keep bangin' away there, Campion. Eventually, after so many hundred posts, you may finally hit some angle that will work well for you.

Also, maybe you could have 3 or 4 more Catholics jump in against me alone. That would be good.

who were ELECTED by the financial sacrifices and hard work of (among others) Evangelical Christians.

And conservative, pro-life Catholics like me.

I have to ask you flat out: Do you work for the DNC? Are you a professional disruptor? Because if you aren't, you're doing a great job of telling Catholics that the GOP is the party of Catholic haters and nativist bigots, who give Catholics zero credit for being on their side; in short, that the GOP isn't for them. And that's certainly something the DNC would like Catholics to believe. I've been a Republican all of my life; I've never felt that the party hated Catholics the way you obviously do.

If you are a professional disruptor, you're very skilled. But you should get lost.

But even among "active" Catholics, who attend Mass weekly, 44%, a hefty plurality, supported Clinton, while 47% voted for Dole.

So your definition of 'overwhelming majority ' is 'fewer than the other guy got'?
