Is Hootie a dinosaur by today's social norms? No doubt about it. But like the dinosaurs, Hootie and his ilk will disappear in their due time. Why the rush to kill him? Because this is just a headline-grabbing ploy by the feminists who are looking for a high-profile PR victory -- and it's a good ploy. None of the women who are making this big stink about Augusta actually want to be members in the club. They simply want to defeat it by walking through the doors, possibly never to return (see Renne, Louise). Johnson knows that if he gives in to the Kim Gandys of the world, his bust will in effect be mounted on a wall of the headquarters of the National Organization of Women. And as cornered game instinctively does, the endangered hootius malesonlius is refusing to be captured without a fierce battle.

If Justice O'Connor honestly wants to become a member of Augusta, Hootie and the old boys just might capitulate. But I seriously doubt that O'Connor cares to hang around Hootie any more than her colleague Clarence Thomas would, and she probably is perfectly happy to be welcome at the thousands of other country clubs throughout the world that would be delighted to have the first female Supreme Court justice gracing their 19th holes.

The best way to destroy stereotypes is to rise above low expectations. Tiger Woods has done just that. Feminists, by and large, have not. While there is a wealth of women who have excelled in what were once males-only-need-apply professions, feminists will, without a twinge of shame, shriek in favor of women who don't excel, insisting that special standards be set to accelerate workforce "diversity" even if lower standards for all result in potential danger for the general public. Who can forget John Stossel's interview with Gloria Steinem in which Steinem insisted that it's better for affirmative-action female firefighters to drag people from burning buildings than for firemen to carry them out on their shoulders?

I will be very disappointed in Tiger if he caves in to the ever-growing pressure. Tiger has no more responsibility than any other golfer to be the poster child for this issue. Like a lesser Jackie Robinson, he has heretofore let his excellence and class speak louder than shallow activist showboating ever would. Unlike feminists he doesn't need to create a sideshow -- he IS the show.

When Tiger Woods first hit the headlines, bill clinton called to invite him to the White House for a photo op. Tiger told clinton he was sorry, but he had a previous engagement.

I think Tiger Woods can take care of himself.

What a silly thought. The PGA was doing fine before Tiger Woods hit the scene. Has he increased viewership? Yes. Would the PGA be profitable without him? Of course.

Ah, but then the Liberals would screech that it is such popular that it is really a public accomodation, belonging to all of us, and therefore it must be open to all. Unfortunately, their tiny little brains cannot actually summon the IQ points to realize that in many cases, the exclusive nature is what makes it popular. (I'll bet the Citadel's draw is far less than it used to be)

Actually, Augusta should say that it is open to any woman who can qualify... using the same tees, etc... but then the liberals would shriek about the inherent unfairness of demanding that merit be the sole determinant, since women can't compete on an equal footing.

Of course, no woman can qualify on the same terms as the men, just like the NBA. Women therefore started their own league, making it exclusionary to men, and yet nobody raises an eyebrow at the glaring double standard.

Feminists, when they cannot earn placement on equal terms, quickly demand entry upon the inherent unfairness of a double-standard. When they cannot gain unearned entry through the legal system, they create the exact same system that they (falsely) complained existed to their detriment: a system where merit is irrelevent where one's gender is concerned.
