**The News**
Main Story:

*U.N. Weapons Inspectors Return to Baghdad: Ending a four-year absence, U.N. weapons inspectors returned to Iraq to resume the task of searching for Saddam Hussein's possible weapons of mass destruction.

In Other News:

*The Republican Party, already assured of Senate control, is mounting a determined campaign to oust freshman Sen. Mary Landrieu in a Louisiana runoff next month and deal another blow to discouraged Democrats.

*No one likes a Sore-Loser: Only about a third of Democratic Party insiders think former Vice President Al Gore should run for president again in 2004, according to a new poll.

*After being informed last fall by U.S. intelligence that the White House had become a target of terrorists possibly armed with a radiological "dirty" bomb, President Bush refused to take the advice of the Secret Service who advised him to leave. "I'm not leaving. The bastards know where I am," he responded defiantly, according Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward.

*Still riding high: According to the first CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll conducted after the congressional elections, 68% of Americans approve of the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president -- up from 63% just before the elections, but about the same level it has been for the past 3 months.

*Israeli Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the international community to get behind Israel's war on terrorism.

Articles and Commentary:

*GOP Convention 2004: It's New York vs. Tampa: When Republicans decide as early as December whether they will hold their national convention in Tampa, New York or New Orleans, the city that wins will have done the most for the Grand Old Party, both politically and financially.

*THE EMERGING 9/11 MAJORITY

Fred Barnes: WE are no longer an equally divided, 50-50 nation. America is now at least 51-49 Republican and right of center, more likely 52-48, maybe even 53-47. The terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, created a new political era, and the midterm election on Nov. 5 confirmed it. Sure, a shift of 20,000 or 30,000 votes in a couple of states would have kept the Senate in Democratic hands. But the GOP gains were from top to bottom:

* an unprecedented Senate takeover plus a bigger House majority, * a majority of governorships, * the defeat of more incumbent Democratic governors than Republican, and * a plurality of state legislatures, giving Republicans more state legislators nationwide than Democrats for the first time in a half-century.

And most amazing: All this was achieved against the historic tide of a midterm election, which normally produces sizable losses for the president's party.

* * Louisiana: Help Suzie Terrell win a senate seat and expand the GOP Senate majoriy by contributing to her campaign. * *

If the conservative agenda is to have a chance of succeeding and if conservative judges are to gain Senate approval, we must preserve a Republican Senate--which is in greater jeopardy than many realize.

For those who understand why the Louisiana election is crucial to retaining the Senate in the face of possible Republican defections by Chafee and McCain, please see the article just posted on:
