"...The libertarian political program is superior to the conservative one, because it measures its goals against constant and measurable ideas - freedom, limited government, the rule of law. Conservatism is forced to defend whatever the status quo is in society, whether it's a status quo of freedom, or a status quo of tyranny..."
That would also explain why liberals can change society, but conservatives can't change it back.
Ever notice how our government becomes more and more socialist over time? It's because liberals get socialist laws passed, and conservatives accept those socialist laws as something that can't be changed.
Conservatives fight against socialist changes, but once the change is make, the fight is over.
An exception to that is the "Homeland Security (tyranny) Bill". Conservatives and neo-conservatives are supporting the unnecessary increase of government and doing the lefts' bidding.
Conservatives fight against socialist changes, but once the change is made, the fight is over.
That is something that needs repeating, loud and often. Way too many haven't caught on to that sad fact yet. Career politicians by definition want to remain in office and that requires retaining political viability. Controversial issues and resurrecting lost causes are things to be avoided. Don't give opponents an issue to use against you. Just keep moving foward, there is a golden retirement package ahead and a lucrative lobbying job too. Just remain viable, that's all that is required.
Socialism is in the interest of the political classes and that of incumbent businesses.
Check out the article in my profile entitlted "corporatism" for an excellent articulation of the problem.
This is false. The inertia of socialism is not reversed, only retarded by conservative compromise. Conservatives at no time have actually advocated extremely limited government, as of late. They have merely "gone along with the drift, just didn't swim."
In the same way, they have compromised at each devaluation of liberty along the way.
It would help if we could list the rights we have gained and the percent of government NECESSARY we have reduced since we have placed our trust where it now lies.
Like "personal values" and "happiness". =)
