Not only that, but the tax hikes that would have followed might have prevented our major economic boom over the past decade. Reagan conservativism may never have become ingrained in the hearts of so many Americans. The world might have been a very different place.
But... Mondale lost big time... he had a snowball's chance in hell.

I wouldn't know. I'd be living in bomb shelter in rural Montana with a 30 year food supply....

You have to look at the positives. For instance, I am sure I would have been speaking fluent Russian if Mondale had won.
Of course, the real painful question is what would have happened in Carter had won. Reagan did a lot in his first term.

iraq would certainly have nuclear weapons after president mondale built saddam nuclear reactors. this after saddam pinky sweared not to seek them. Iran would probably still have hostages in our embassy. the top tax rate would be around 85% and the soviets would still be in afghanistan not to even mention what east asia would look like.

What's really scary is to compare the performance of Mondale in '84 with Gore in '00 - especially given the fact that Mondale at least had the virtue of not being a condescending sissy-boy.
It's indicative of a *VERY* sobering trend in American politics which may have experienced a setback in recent weeks, but which have so much momentum that eventually it will dominate the political landscape.
It's a scenario best described as the "inmates running the asylum".

Go to Amazon.com. Look under author Harry Turtledove. He has written some great alternative history stories.

I'm going to bed soon so maybe I'll have the following nightmare...
1984 - Mondale/Ferraro elected
1988 - Mondale/Ferraro re-elected
1992 - Ferarro/Clinton elected
1996 - Ferarro/Clinton re-elected - 22nd Amendment repealed limiting president to two terms
2000 - Clinton/Clinton elected

If Mondale had been elected in 1984:
*President Gore announced today that the Fed would again increase interest rates now at a record 30%.
*Smuggling of gasoline and cigarettes has increased drastically since both were banned 5 years ago.
*Parts of the Midwest were being evacuated to Florida as a record spell of cloudy weather obscured the solar collectors supplying electricity to the region. Normal winter winds were coming increasingly at odd hours making the back up windmill generators less effective. Many residents were forced to defy the ban on burning wood or fossil fuels to keep from freezing during the first cold snap of the winter.
*The Iraqi Army of Liberation continues to occupy most of the east coast of the United States and despite the terms of the UN treaty Saddam Hussain has ordered the forced deportation of Jews to "indoctrination" camps.

Leonid Brezhnev would be President of the United States.
Saddam Hussein would be Vice President of the United States.
Television would run a weekly program wabout the President of the United States starring Martin Sheen.
Cadillac division of General Motors would be selling 2003 models.
K-Mart would be bankrupt. Kurt Cobain would be dead.
Michael Jackson would be walking around with Band-Aids on his nose.
O.J.Simpson would be searching for the real killers on golf courses of America.
Bill Gates would be the richest man in the world.
The Rolling Stones would be on the 40th anniversary "Hot Licks" Tour.
Onanizers would be inventing aqnd playing whatif games.

Your post is a little funny. But Jews in Iraq do happen to exist as do Christians. And both are allowed to worship freely- unlike most other "allied" arab nations we are trying to get behind an Iraqi war.

I wouldn't have an ass because it would have been taxed off.

I don't think the Dems would have let Clinton into their elite power circle that they created. They would have went with big name Democrats from the Seventies and Eighties . Remember, Clinton came out of "nowhere".

America under Carter/Mondale was glum. Things were looking bleak. It was about over for America. Then came the Olympics. Remember that ad? The Olympic torch being carried through the Midwest and the farmers ceasing to grump for a moment as it went by? That was the turning point, and then Reagan won an 8-year reprieve.
