The Republican takeover of the U.S. Senate will give automakers a more friendly audience in Congress next year, but relations with two key committee chairmen will determine how Detroit's legislative agenda fares.

The auto industry's fortunes in Washington improved with the election of President George W. Bush in 2000. But Detroit's Washington representatives say they will still need support from both political parties to expand global trade, dodge tougher environmental laws and more stringent fuel economy rules, and minimize regulations.
