In the 2003 Index of Economic Freedom, released today by the Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal, the big story is Europe. Six of the 10 freest economies in the Index are in North America or Europe and half of all "free" economies are in Europe. European politicians may cling to the rhetoric of socialism, but on much of that continent, economic liberty is gaining ground.

Note: Due to economic or political instability, Angola, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa), Iraq and Sudan weren't ranked.Surely it shouldn't be that difficult to determine a rank for Iraq?
I'd love to know how it compares to Cuba or North Korea.
And I wanted to spend my winter vacation in Iraq, but for some strange reason Orbitz ("Exploring Planet Earth") won't give me a fare :-(.
But their Five Star Hotel beats Four Seasons handily on rates, although I must say that architecturally it's a bit of a boring box.
You can always visit The Iraqi Tourism Board for details on your next fun vacation in Iraq, cradle of civilization!
Bizarrely, the legendary Mother of all Battles Mosque is not mentioned in the lengthly list of religious tourist attractions. (See also this related article.)
I'm afraid the US State Department (spoilsports!) doesn't think much of my vacation idea.
