To anti-American bigots, Washington is a sadistic oppressor and anyone with brown skin a hapless victim. It does not dent their fantasy that Muslims blow up Americans and their infidel allies every week or two. Rather than discuss systematic Islamist murder, members of the hard left obsessively root about for a countervailing U.S. crime in a bid to cast America as the real villain. And naturally they find it in racism.
In order to protect the United States from human bombs, border officials are sensibly subjecting visitors born in certain terror-incubating nations to extra scrutiny. To a left that's been discredited and sucked morally dry by terror apologism, failed predictions of an Afghanistan "quagmire," and the pathetic embarrassment of Jenin ("Oh, the humanity! Oh the stench! Oh the ... uh, never mind."), this is the new talking point: Amerika the Racist.
The rhetoric is surreal. Read The Toronto Star or watch the CBC and you'll enter a moral universe where an hour or two's extra wait at Detroit-Windsor is akin to four years in a WWII Japanese internment camp. Topping the charts is Heather Mallick, who told Globe and Mail readers last Saturday that U.S. border policies remind her of Kristallnacht-era anti-Semitism. They also apparently remind her of Israeli soldiers, who she casually characterizes as barbaric thugs.
But that's not all. Ms. Mallick also hails Canadian novelist Rohinton Mistry as "the modern Rosa Parks" for his decision to cancel a U.S. book tour in protest against rude airport officials. Most Globe readers no doubt thought they were reading satire: A world-famous Canadian author jet-setting from one crowd of fawning U.S. fans to another -- and subject to the same tiresome security checks as the rest of us -- is compared with a victim of Deep-South racism who heroically refused to give up her seat on the bus.
Ms. Mallick says she'll boycott the United States too. The puzzle of why Americans should care is a mystery she's left to her next column.
LOLOLOL! Okay, Heather...
"The puzzle of why Americans should care is a mystery she's left to her next column."
I haven't a clue...
Mark Steyn comes to mind.
AYE???
Airport waits are their "HOLOCAUST"!!!! ATTICA!!! ATTICA!!!
Emphasis on the "ick". Geez Louise! Figures, doesn't it?
