Combest resigns from Congress
U.S. Rep. Larry Combest, R-Lubbock, announced his resignation effective May 2003.
Combest released the following statement today:
"There have been a number of events that have happened to Sharon and me in the last year that have made us realize how fragile life and health are. They certainly caused us to rearrange our priorities and we want to spend as much time together while we have our life and health. In order for us to be able to spend that time together, I will submit my resignation from Congress effective on May 31, 2003. That should provide ample time for individuals who wish to run for the office to make their intentions known and for there to be a special election to fill the seat.
"Through 10 elections, the people of the 19th Congressional District have been very kind to us and words cannot express our appreciation for the confidence they have shown in us. We have so many wonderful friends and are looking forward to being at home in Lubbock to enjoy their friendship even more," Combest said.

Lubbock sounds like safe "red" country.
I wonder why he ran for re-election?
To: ambrose
He won last Tuesday w/ something like 90% of the vote. The only democrat possibilitywould be a well-liked conservative democrat such as Texas House Speaker (former soon) Pete Laney, or some similar type individual.

Sounds like there's a serious health problem with either he or his wife. Is there?
To: hispanarepublicana
My district. It couldn't be more safe. Usually just a Libertarian runs against him.

I agree. Unless he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness during the last week, why did he screw the voters who sent him to Congress 10 times?

I wonder why he ran for re-election? Situations can develop and change quickly, in days or hours. Filing for office takes some time, maybe months.

Unless he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness Makes you wonder. Something like that - or a scandel brewing.

Sounds like sudden problems. Hope it's not as bad as it sounds.

Sounds to me like he just received some bad news from a doctor. If so, he is doing his constituents and the nation service in giving his constituents time to choose his successor.
One thing stands out clearly -- Republican officeholders are demonstrating class act performances all over the nation.

I wish the best for Congressman Combest and his family.

I think maybe he has some honor because he will wait before he quits so everyone can figure yout how to run for his seat. That seems fair to me.

"...a number of events...in the last year..."
Does NOT sound sudden, unless the "events" suddenly got much worse.

If so, he is doing his constituents and the nation service in giving his constituents time to choose his successor. This is also the classy thing to do if it's not an illness, but an impending scandal as some here have wondered (although I don't think it's a scandal)rather than having to be pried out of office like Gary Condit. In any event,I'm afraid it sounds more health related.
