Norwegians line up for Two Towers

Sean Astin (Sam) and Elijah Wood (Frodo)

JRR Tolkien's story is loved by Norwegians

The new Lord of the Rings film has rocketed to the top of the Norwegian box office - six weeks before its 18 December world release.

Tickets for The Two Towers are outselling every other film currently being shown in the country.

More than 35,000 tickets were snapped up on the first day of sales.

Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom will return in the new film

Guttorm Petterson, managing director of distributors SF Norge, said he expected the first week's total to exceed 50,000, pushing current blockbuster Red Dragon into second place.

"The interest has been enormous," said Petterson, who set up an entire medieval village in an Oslo park where JRR Tolkien fans could camp while queueing for tickets.

On the night before sales began, the 'Hobbit' village - which included a miniature inn, houses and tepee-style tents - accommodated 600 fans.

Triumph

Last year, about 600 people queued for several days in Oslo to see the premiere of the first Lord of the Rings film, starring Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Liv Tyler and Sean Bean.

More than 60,000 tickets were sold in Norway before the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

The movie clocked up a total of one million admissions.

The Peter Jackson-directed epic triumphed at this year's Oscars, winning four prizes including those for cinematography and visual effects.

Must not be a lot going on up there in Norway. I am a big fan of the book and the movie but I can wait until after Christmas to see the movie - after the crowds die down a little. Probably the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.

Me too. I want to enjoy the movie, not be suffocated by a mass of people!

Is there a LOTR bump list?

You can either ping maquiladora, ecurbh, or HairOfTheDog. They have LoTR ping lists. Let them know if you want on it.

Or you can post a link at The New Hobbit Hole. Someone there will see it and ping everyone.

Stop by for a pint and some mushrooms if you have time. ;^)

Special Edition Extended length DVD goes on sale tomorrow. That will help me "make it" until The Two Towers comes to town in December!

WOOHOO! Those pics are fantastic! That was my very first glimpse of Treebeard, and they did him just the way I had imagined him. Thank you for that link. Don't look at pic #29 while eating though, ugh.

What you said. I definitely wanted to see "Fellowship" on the big screen, but there was no way we were going on opening weekend - we ended up going the day after New Year's.

I don't blame you for not wanting to try and catch up. So don't. We have new people drop in all the time.

Topics tend to recycle and the latest news usually makes its way onto that thread before it gets anywhere else on FR.

So if you decide to drop in that would be great. If not, the door is always open. ;^)

Pinging the Spoiler alert list! Sorry so tardy this morning, I was up late watching a train wreck!

Spoiler alert!

RBA - We have a Topic in General Interest.... ( The Hobbit Hole Topic - Separate from the namesake thread) That is where all the recent LoTR threads are put. If you don't mind, or when you think the activity has stopped on this thread here, ask the mod to move it to GI so we can file it in the Hobbit Hole Topic with the others. Folk that follow this stuff look there!

I'm a rabid Tolkien fan, but I don't see why these threads have to exist on FreeRepublic. The bandwidth and storage should be used to discuss and further conservative political ideals, not share hobbies and interests.

Thank you for sharing. A lot of people enjoy the Tolkien threads, so I guess I am thankful that you do not make the rules.

Tell me more about your conservative political ideals, and where this sudden impulse to pee in our corn flakes fits into those ideals!

Can you move this over to GI now so we can file it with the other Hobbity threads?
