Salmon's odds are good Nov. 9, 2002 It would be foolish for anyone to predict that Matt Salmon will win the governor's race. But AP's pronouncement of Janet Napolitano's victory may prove to be just as foolish. I, for one, hope it will. Salmon's chances are certainly not over. Among the still uncounted ballots, a 60-40 ratio would be enough to put Salmon over the top. And that is not unrealistic given the circumstances: • Maricopa County generally goes Republican. • Most of the uncounted ballots were early ballots that hadn't been mailed in. Hundreds of volunteers spent Tuesday working the phones. One of the prime targets was Republican voters who had requested early ballots but had not yet mailed them in. • Republican requests for early ballots outnumbered Democrat requests 2-1. What these factors add up to is that regardless of the trends on Election Day, it is quite feasible for those uncounted ballots to go 60-40 in favor of Salmon. - Scott Herrell Chandler
