HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARINES!
IN THE BEGINNING... In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God.
In the Beginning was God - and all else was darkness, and void, and without form.
So God created the heavens and the earth. He created the sun, and the moon, and the stars, so that light might pierce the darkness.
And the earth God divided between the land and the sea, and these He filled with many assorted creatures.
And the dark, salty, slimy creatures that inhabited the murky depths of the oceans, God called sailors, and He dressed them accordingly.
And the flighty creatures of the air He called airmen. And these He clothed in uniforms which were ruffled and fowl.
And the lower creatures of the land, God called soldiers. And with a twinkle in His eye, and a sense of humor that only He could have, God gave them trousers too short, and covers too large, and pockets to warm their hands.
And to adorn their uniforms, God gave them badges. And He gave them cords. And He gave them ribbons... and patches... and stars... and bells.
He gave them emblems... and crests... and all sorts of shiny things that glittered... and devices that dangled.
When you're God, you tend to get carried away in a big way.
And on the 7th day, as you know, God rested. And on the 8th day at 0730, God looked down upon the earth and was not happy.
GOD WAS NOT HAPPY!
So He thought about His labors, and in His infinite wisdom, God created a divine creature and this He called a Marine. And these Marines whom God created in His own image, were to be of the air, the land, and the sea. And these He gave many wonderful uniforms.
He gave them practical, fighting uniforms, so that they could wage war against the forces of Satan and evil.
He gave them service uniforms for their daily work and training, that they might be sharp and ready.
And He gave them evening and dress uniforms. Sharp, stylish, handsome things, so they might score with the ladies on Saturday night, and impress the hell outta everybody!
And at the end of the 8th day, God looked down upon the earth, and saw that it was good. But was God happy? No!
GOD WAS STILL NOT HAPPY!
Because in the course of His labors, He had forgotten one thing... He did not have a Marine uniform! But He thought about it, and thought about it, and finally satisfied Himself in knowing that, well, not everybody can be a Marine...
U.S. MARINES

SEMPER FI - DO OR DIE.
I AM A LEAN, MEAN, GREEN, AMPHIBIOUS MONSTER MADE OF BLOOD

AND, WHEN MY TIME COMES I'LL DIE A GLORIOUS DEATH ON THE
BATTLEFIELD, GIVING MY LIFE FOR MOM, APPLE PIE AND THE
AMERICAN FLAG.
WE STOLE THE EAGLE FROM THE AIR FORCE, THE ANCHOR FROM THE
NAVY AND THE ROPE FROM THE ARMY.
ON THE SEVENTH DAY WHILE GOD RESTED, WE OVERRAN HIS
PERIMETER, STOLE THE GLOBE AND WE'VE BEEN RUNNING THE
WHOLE SHOW EVER SINCE.
WE LIVE LIKE SOLDIERS, TALK LIKE SAILORS, AND SLAP THE HELL
OUT OF BOTH OF THEM.
WARRIORS BY DAY, LOVERS BY NIGHT, PROFESSIONALS BY CHOICE,
AND MARINES BY THE GRACE OF GOD.

Happy Birthday to all Marines, now and in the past! A special thanks to my brother who spent 27 years in the Corps and now is ill with terminal cancer. He was in WW II, China, Korea, Lebanon, Viet Nam, and Santo Domingo being shot at and surviving.
While serving in Los Angeles, he was one of the founders of Toys for Tots. He was a Master Gunnery Sergeant at retirement We are proud of him and all he did to keep America free and help make poor kids happy.

My Dad retired as an infantry Gunny, I retired as a Major air support contrrol officer (same unit as Race Bannon), oldest son was an ANGLICO communicator, got out in '00, youngest son was a Amtrac tech in CamPen and EASed last month.
SgtMaj of the USMC Puckett said he saw me running buckassed naked down the sidewalk when I was about two, chased by my mother. He said to his wife,"Come here hon, there goes officer material!"
From an old plaque
A Marine
Between the security of childhood, and the insecurity of a second childhood, we find that fascinating element of humanity called "A Marine".
He comes in assorted sizes and can be found anywhere
on ships, in bars, in jail, in love and always in debt.
Girls love him, towns tolerate him, and the government supports him.
A Marine is laziness with a pack of cards, bravery with a tattooed arm, and the protector of land, sea, and air with a copy of playboy magazine.
He has the energy of a turtle, the slyness of a fox, and the brain of a flea; the stories of a sea captain, the security of a liar, the inspiration of a Casanova. When he wants something it is usually connected with liberty.
Some of his likes are women, girls, females, dames, broads, and the opposite sex. He dislikes answering letters, wearing his uniform, superior officers, Dogfaces, Squids, Airdeles, and getting up on time.
No one but A Marine can cram into one pocket a little book, a pack of cigarettes, Ann Margarets picture, a comb, a bottle of beer, a church key, and whats left of last weeks pay.
He likes to spend some money on beer, so on women, some on cigarettes, and the rest foolishly.
A Marine is a unique creature. You can lock him out of your house, but not out of your heart.
You would like to forget your bleary-eyed, good for nothing,long-away-from-home lover with his scattered dreams, but his faults become insignificant when your Marine looks at you with those blood shot eyes and says:
Hi Honey,
Take off your clothes
Semper Fi to Marines past, present, and future. Health to OUR Corps!

Thank you, Tonk and Cobby, for the hail to this thread. My first United States Marine Corps Birthday was spent at Parris Island in 1952 as a Classsroom Subjects Instructor for women recruits.
This was at the height of the largest buildup in the history of the Corps, during the Korean Conflict.
Any of you who have trained at Parris Island will recognize the subject of this photograph -
the Iwo Jima Monument on the Parade Deck:
The photograph, with me in front, taken by my grandson,
was made this year at Parris Island -
50 years after I entered the Corps.
The Iwo Jima Monument was dedicated in August of '52.
In the Dedication Ceremony were eight full companies participating, with the WM Company "A" leading it.
It was my high honor to be out front with our Company Commander as Guidon Bearer, carrying proudly the American Flag, and with the other seven Guidon Bearers going 'Front & Center' to salute the Reviewing Dignitaries.

Semper Fidelis, Corey
Corey DePooter deserved to become a United States Marine. He deserved to grow up, too. But he never got the chance to do either: He was one of the kids murdered in the Columbine library.
Yet DePooter's brave acts that terrible day exemplified the best that the U.S. Marine Corps represents.
The 17-year-old had gone to the library to study during his lunch break, a remarkable act of self-discipline. When the shooting started, DePooter stayed calm and soothed other terrified students, displaying extraordinary coolness under fire.
Most courageous of all, young DePooter then used his own body to shield two other students from the barrage of bullets. That's how he died: protecting his friends.
On the battlefield, a warrior who sacrifices himself for his comrades is called a hero. In certain cases, such valor merits the hallowed Medal of Honor, the highest commendation the United States bestows.
But DePooter wasn't in battle, just at school, when all that he loved - the family he brought so much joy, his enchantment with fly fishing - was stolen from him. He never got his opportunity to join America's elite military service.
The Marines, however, have embraced him. In a rare move, the corps on Wednesday made DePooter an honorary Marine. The unusual recognition is fitting.
DePooter's study of the history of the Marines surely had taught him that the corps values loyalty, courage and personal honor. No one can say whether those studies, and his longstanding ambition to become a Marine, already had led him to internalize the high standards that the corps expounds. Doubtless, though, DePooter's bravery under fire was as much as the Marines could have demanded from one of their own.
The Marine Corps' hymn says the streets of Heaven are guarded by United States Marines. Perhaps Corey Depooter is there, finally clothed in his longed-for dress blues.
