A 40-year-old man has been indicted on federal charges of possessing child pornography and of sexually exploiting a teenage boy he met through a mentoring program.
Prosecutors said Brian Keith O'Quin of Austin took a sexually explicit picture of the boy, whom he had gotten to know through a Big Brothers Big Sisters program in 2000 and 2001.
O'Quin also was indicted on four counts of receiving and possessing child pornography unrelated to the boy. Investigators found numerous sexually explicit pictures and videos of minors on his computer, prosecutors said.
O'Quin is being held without bail pending a detention hearing Tuesday in federal court.
He also has been indicted on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child in an unrelated case. That case is pending in Travis County District Court. O'Quin faces further charges relating to that second case in Williamson County, prosecutors said.
A lawyer representing O'Quin in the Travis County case declined to comment.
If convicted of the federal charge of sexual exploitation, O'Quin faces up to 20 years in prison. The receiving child pornography charge is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and the possession of child pornography carries a maximum five-year sentence.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney John Klassen said the investigation began in December when a 20-year-old man told police that O'Quin had molested him years before.
While searching O'Quin's computer, investigators discovered pictures of the boy from the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
The investigation has involved law enforcement authorities from Austin and Williamson County, as well as the state attorney general's Internet Bureau.
