Election Losers, Whiners, and Winners
By Roger Burdick www.Chronwatch.com Friday, November 08, 2002
The biggest losers in the latest election are the citizens of California. In his one term, Gray Davis took a two-billion-dollar surplus and turned it into a 50-billion-dollar deficit. That will grow to over a 100-billion-dollar deficit by the end of his next term. Why would anyone in his or her right (or left) mind vote for this guy? I repeat: ''The citizens of California are the biggest losers in this years election.''
Senator Jim Jeffords of Vermont is certainly a loser. It's going to be fun to watch Jeffords twist in the wind now that the Republicans are back in control of the Senate. Jeffords jumped parties for a prized chairmanship on the Environment and Public Works Committee, a pork barrel project committee. Now what's he going to do? Hell probably get zero offers from the GOP, and hes now worthless as a vote for the Democrats. Ill be sadly disappointed if the GOP makes any offers for him to rejoin the GOP.
Since Jeffords has no party affiliation, how is he going to raise money for his next election? Maybe he didnt plan on running again anyway. Hes still a loser, just not as big a one as any given California citizen.
Terry McAuliffe a loser? You betcha! On top of that, hes a First Class Whiner. Remember the predictions of ''Jeb Bush is gone,'' and the wins of Jean Carnahan and Walter Mondale? Now, hes scrambling to find an answer to why he was so wrong. Terry, let me clue you in. Say ''Bill Clinton.'' Almost every candidate lost big that your buddy, Bill, stumped for. Get a clue!
How about the whiners of the press corps who predicted status quo in the Senate? Ive heard every excuse for the Republican victory except the one that really counts--the real answer. The one the press corps cant say because theyll choke: The Republicans won because the Democrats under Clintons leadership have gone too far left and are way too corrupt for the average voter's taste. Why do you think George Bush has such a high popularity percentage? Because, hes the opposite of what the Democratic Party has become. Every time I see another talking-head liberal whine on TV, I feel like reaching for the baby bottle and plugging it into the TV. There are fewer crying babies in the average maternity ward than there have been on the nightly newscasts lately.
The winners are the people of America who will get a little less partisanship and stalls. Maybe well get some judges nominated. Maybe well get some decent homeland security measures passed. Maybe well get some decent laws for a change. Just remember, the Democrats can still filibuster in the Senate, and a two-thirds vote of the Senate (which the Republicans don't have) is necessary to stop a filibuster.
Other winners are the candidates on all sides who campaigned hard for the vote.
The final tally is:
House seats--The Republicans picked up five and have 228, there is one Independent, and the Democrats have 203. There are three seats yet to be determined.
Senate seats--The Republicans have 51, the Democrats 46, and there is one Independent and two yet to be determined. There is a Louisiana runoff election in December, and the South Dakota election is too close to call and facing a recount.
That is always the issue in winning elections, voting!
That is why I was so suprised when I heard about panhandle voters in Florida in 2000, who turned back when they thought Gore had won.
What about the other office's?
New GOP motto JUST VOTE!
