There's a clear heartbeat long before the 3rd trimester -- try 6 weeks or so (often before a women even knows she's pregnant). Neural activity way early, too. And who's to say surgery in-utero won't be possible that early someday, as well?
The problem of defining life in terms of convenience is that you must constantly revamp your definition of life. Conception is the one point where there's no question of life: what was not, now is. Complete, unique DNA from conception. After that, all you're quibbling over is how old the baby gets before you can't stomach killing it.

Heck! When I was pregnant just 16 weeks with my twins, you could see them 'swimming' around and moving like two little astronauts. I don't believe in abortion (at all- no trimester - zip-zero-nada), but I also realize that I cannot dictate to others what they should do or not do with their lives. What I do resent, is the fact that MY tax dollars go to pay for abortions. NO ONE is giving me a choice there. No one asked me if I agreed to fund baby killing. Those who choose to abort their children, may do so freely, but I don't want to be an accomplice to this by having my hard earned money go toward it. In the end, we all face our Creator, and it is He to whom we will have to answer.
