Delivering a Touch of Home

A Touch of Home

.

This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.

Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.

Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.

This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.

Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.

We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.

So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.

.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The vase of roses looks beautiful in the Canteen foyer today, Tonk.

HUGS to you, the men in the military and at the Canteen.

The Adopt-a-Village program is a wonderful thing for our troops to do. Even though there are still "bad guys" in Afghanistan, there are people there who have suffered a long time and truly need and appreciate the help.

The GAU-8 Gatling gun mounted on the Air Force's A-10 Aircraft fired 30mm armor piercing incendiary (API) rounds with a DU penetrator slug.

The 148 A-10s that deployed to Saudi Arabia flew 8,077 combat sorties. A typical combat load would include 1,100 rounds of 30mm API ammunition and high explosive incendiary (HEI) ammunition for the GAU-8.

30mm API is mixed with 30mm HEI at the factory and is called Combat Mix Ammunition. The ratio of API to HEI rounds in the Combat Mix is 5 to 1.

The Air Force fired 783,514 rounds of 30mm API in the Gulf War. Since each round contains approximately 0.66 pounds of DU, the Air Force expended a total of 259 tons of DU in the Gulf. This would fit in a box measuring 7.6 feet by 7.6 feet by 7.6 feet. This total includes the expenditure from the 174th Tactical Fighter Wing's A-16 that flew close air support on February 26, 1991, equipped with the GPU30 gun pod, firing a 5:1 mix of 30mm DU and HEI rounds. DU = Depleted Uranium

When people come round to see me and they see the cat's litter box, they always say, "Oh, you have a cat?"
I often joke with them, saying "No, it's for my guests."

LOL!! You've just given me a good idea to use on folks when they visit us and ask the same question!

I've heard of tests done with cats that show they have the same level of understanding words as a 2 to 3 year old child. I really have no argument with that finding, honestly. Sometimes these critters almost scare me with how much they seem to understand. LOL!! Too darned smart for their own good sometimes!

I love them A-10 warthogs. We need airplanes that can just cruise along slowly and pound the crap out of ground targets, IMVHO.

My poor hubby's sitting here trying to figure out what's so funny about the music. He hasn't seen the thread today.
