Howie Carr Kicks O'Brien When She's Down (Too funny...)

The unbecoming of O'Brien leaves many questions

by Howie Carr

Ding Dong, the witch is dead.

Now that she's finished, maybe Shannon O'Brien can finally answer a few questions truthfully:

Was it wise to endorse cutting the age of parental consent for abortions to 16?

Would you crack wise again with Tim Russert about having a tattoo?

Shannon, how many votes do you think you won by coming out for gay marriages?

Is it safe to say that last week's Herald debate was as fatal to your chances as John Silber's interview with Natalie Jacobsen in 1990?

Was it a good move to telegraph what a shameless, amoral hack you are by allowing all those judges who were ex-state reps to double-dip pensions?

So many questions for Shannon, so little time left before she files for unemployment:

Was it worth it, to have your husband Enron Emmet make $400,000 lobbying for a couple of years, now that it's cost you your political career?

How many of the sob sisters at El Globo are going to have to be put on a suicide watch?

Why did you keep talking about ``working families,'' when it was so palpably clear that your core constituency, indeed your only constituency, were the non-working families of Massachusetts. Speaking of which, Shannon, whatever happened in Ward 11 yesterday morning, was it smart to let your union thugs run wild in Boston and Newton, ginning up a massive suburban vote that was already terrified by the prospect of one-party welfare state rule under the thumb of O'Brien, O'Brien, Travaglini, Travaglini and Finneran?

How long do you think Enron Emmet's old lobbying firm, now run by Emmet's former State House aide, will have the Bechtel lobbying contract now that you aren't going to be governor?

Another question, Shannon: After accusing Mitt Romney of being a sexist because he used the word ``unbecoming,'' should you have spent the rest of the campaign being squired about the state by those well-known respecters of women, Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy?

And whatever happened to all those missing $1 million scratch tickets?

Let's face it. Shannon O'Brien's problem is - was - that she is as phony as a three-dollar bill.

Voting for her was like voting for organized crime. Her wing of the Democratic party is organized crime, maybe not in the mob sense, but she runs with the political equivalent of gangsters.

And how breathtakingly hypocritical was it, to claim that Mitt Romney was a robber baron, when her running-mate - her money bags, her sugar daddy, the windbag Chris Gabrieli - was in the same deals that she was ripping Mitt for?

You could see how this one was going to turn out from the children's polls. A substitute teacher in Quincy told me his middle-school class voted for Romney last week. Last night, a fourth-grader in Lowell told me her parochial school class had gone for Mitt. And then a mother of a kindergarten kid in Winthrop said the same thing. You've got to be a pretty wretched Democrat not to run up huge margins in Quincy, Lowell and Winthrop.

A lot of people didn't watch the first four debates on TV. And when they tuned in to the final one last week, they saw a woman who, as someone said last week, reminded every guy of his first ex-wife. She smirked, she didn't listen, she wouldn't answer questions, she frightened people.

And who exactly is - was - Shannon O'Brien?

Was she the pro-life state rep of 1986, or the rabidly pro-abortion statewide candidate of 2002?

Was she from western Mass., or from Whitman?

Was she a liberal, or was she a hack? (She was both.)

And now Shannon becomes the second consecutive treasurer to flame out in a bid for governor. Tim Cahill won't make it three in a row. He knows his limits.

So that leaves us with one final question, and it's not for Shannon. It's for the manager of the local International House of Pancakes. If you had to pick - when you have to pick, in January - which of these two eminently qualified females would you prefer to hire as your new hostess?

Shannon O'Brien or Jane Swift.

Yeah, but Mr. Severin isn't published on the Herald's website for me to read here in Wisconsin. Besides, Howie is an acquired taste (or lack thereof) for many.

Youch. Have even the air-headed libs of Mass had enough? Will they get rid of The Drowner in 2004? Questions, questions questions....
