MSNBC's boss is on thin ice

Wednesday, November 6th, 2002

MSNBC boss Erik Sorenson's future at the troubled cable news network is looking shaky.

Sorenson's boss, NBC CEO Bob Wright, left doubts about Sorenson's tenure in an interview with the Daily News.

When asked whether the MSNBC boss would keep his job, Wright declined to respond, saying only that he "is working his tail off" at turning around the network.

"It clearly signifies his tenure is short-lived," said Jack Myers, editor of media newsletter Myers Report.

Wright was down on MSNBC, saying the No. 3 cable news network has "a programming issue" and trying to fix it "has been a struggle." He drew a distinction between MSNBC and its sister network, financial news channel CNBC, which has slipped in the ratings but still makes "tons of money" - nearly $300 million in projected profits this year.

Speculation has been rife that Sorenson's days are numbered. Pressure from NBC and its parent company, General Electric, has mounted following a failed attempt to revive MSNBC with an overhaul that included the hiring of liberal talk show host Phil Donahue.

Insiders have insisted that Sorenson will be given more time to spark a turnaround. NBC News boss Neal Shapiro has said that no management changes are coming at MSNBC.

"Fox News Channel has taken the lion's share of the audience with a Rush Limbaugh approach, and CNN has traditionally been on the liberal side," Wright said. "We're caught in the middle."

Musical madness

It's make-or-break time for many execs of the troubled music industry.

With CD sales down nearly 10% so far this year, top people at the labels are expected to be fired or see their labels cut if they don't make their numbers.

"There's always pressure; now it's bordering on psychotic," said one record label boss. "Any sort of precarious jobs are on the line."

Over the next several weeks, the industry will release an unprecedented number of CDs from such multiplatinum acts as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Jay-Z, Matchbox Twenty, Pearl Jam, Toni Braxton and Jennifer Lopez.

And how those albums perform will play an important role in determining the future of execs at music giants such as BMG Entertainment. In a big cost-saving move, BMG is expected to merge three of its labels, Clive Davis' J Records, RCA Records and Jive, which it is about to acquire.

Also under scrutiny is lumbering MCA Records and its boss, Jay Boberg.

Gloating media

Under heavy pressure from Citigroup, CNBC's Maria Bartiromo agreed to limit her questions in an interview with Citigroup chief Sanford Weill last week.

CNBC ultimately decided to kill the interview - but that didn't stop CNBC's rivals from gloating.

"We would never have done an interview with ground rules," said Bloomberg TV boss Marty Schenker, who was not offered face time with Weill.

A CNN financial news spokeswoman said the same, though CNN's Lou Dobbs passed because he was not given an exclusive interview.

When Citigroup invited a large group of journalists to talk to Weill about a new brokerage unit last week, it told them not to query on touchy allegations involving him.

"We were very upfront with all the reporters that we would not be able to talk about issues under investigation," said Citigroup spokeswoman Leah Johnson.

Hopefully CNBC won't get pared down. Really like the network, not too much liberal or conservative bias. Its just business, and (some) in depth interviews. Oh and Joe Kernan's hair.

CNN has traditionally been on the liberal side," Wright said. "We're caught in the middle."

So that's why MSNBC brought Dona-who on? And has Tip O'Neill's henchboy, Matthews, calling the election? Please.

"We're caught in the middle."

Middle my arse, unless he means in between Socialist and Communist

Not only is PMSNBC left-wing, but worse, it's the most boring of the three cable news outlets.

At least CNN's personalities are moderately entertaining in their liberal stupidity.

I mentioned this on another thread. Switching back and forth on the cable channels tonite, while I was listening, I didn't hear Donahue mention the elections ONCE! Winona, a missing soldier, and Ray Romano. Gee, I can't see why people aren't watching MSNBC.

"Fox News Channel has taken the lion's share of the audience with a Rush Limbaugh approach

What’s the H*ll is he talking about.

They may have taken the lion’s share of the audience, but I do not see any resemblance in Fox’s approach to reporting the news and Rush’s giving his opinion of the news.

What I liked about their panel was that they weren't a bunch of cheerleaders. And the network hasn't falled prety to the ABC/CNN/FOX trap of inviting political advisors on and asking them who they think will win. That just drives me nuts.

Watching the election coverage on CNN and MSNBC is like watching a democrat party movie, or commercial, or documentary.

"What are they (we) going to do?"
"What happened?"
"What did the Republicans do to (us)?"

Very little to nothing about, what are AMERICANS thinking, when they vote FOR REPUBLICANS, not democrats?

Very little about what may be WRONG WITH DEMOCRAT IDEAS.

Very little about WHAT MAY BE RIGHT WITH REPUBLICAN IDEAS.

Gephardt ould only say it was "UNIQUE."

Didn't you sense the balance last night? There was the Fineman the print lib, Donna Brazille the screaming lib, Pat Caudell, the incoherant lib, Chris himself, another screaming lib.

All balanced by the ultra-uber-arch conservative Peggy Noonan, who is in thrall to Aaron 'hold ma mushrooms' Sorkin of the "West Wing".

Did anyone else notice that Chris kept calling Peggy, Margaret last night? What's up with that?

Donna Brazile and Peggy Noonan weren't cheerleaders?

Although I'd say the Noonan was much more honest than Brazile, but that goes without saying. The only reason Pat Cadell was entertaining was because he was bashing the Democratic leadership.

LOL, Every girl in Catholic school has Margaret buried in her name somewhere.

Peggy did look great. I wish she'd make some new friends/business associates. She provides cover to the 'West Wing' by being their token conservative.

FOX is fair and balanced, right down the middle. CNN borders on communist. The only hope to survive would be for PMSNBC to take the far right. The could cut into a portion of FOX's audience that way.

Hmmmm, the Ron Paul Factor, bring back the Alan Keys show, perhaps even Buchanan and Begala.
