Be Careful What You Wish For

There is an old saying, "Be careful what you wish for. You may get it."
Conservatives wished and worked very hard for Republican control of the Senate and an increased Republican majority in the House. Last night, America gave us these things.
However, I'm concerned about the departure of several conservative members who are being replaced by new Senators who are inclined to pull to the so-called "center."
For example, we are losing conservative stalwart Jesse Helms. While the Republicans held his seat, he is being replaced by Elizabeth Dole, a Washington establishemnt pol na dwife of "the tax collector for the welfare state." Lamar Alexander is a nice guy but he's certainly not going to do as much for us as Fred Thompson. Lindsey Graham was actively involved in the Dump Newt movement. He is replacing Strom Thurmond. And John Sununu is certainly not the conservative that Bob Smith is.

So, you're thinking that one of those folks will vote against making tax cuts permanent or against Bush judicial nominees?
To: anniegetyourgun
I'd give back all of those folks for one of what we lost.

You're right, 100% right... we should have left things the way they were. /sarcasm

I'm giving the GOP a chance to find their souls and become the party my family has stood behind for over 80 years.
I'm not expecting miracles and there will be some compromise, but if they better start accomplishing something. NO EXCUSES.

There is some credence to your "concerns", however, we are talking about a current dynamic that involves a President of the caliber of GW. IMHO

The Republicans are just engaging in their usual self-destruction.
To: norraad
And we'd still be in the minority....

Why on earth is Strom Thurmond being replaced?!
To: norraad
I'd give back all of those folks for one of what we lost. One of those we lost, when in the minority, could not help us get one single solitary judge through. NOT ONE!

The Republican Party has given us no indication that it intends to mvoe the ball in the direction of limited government. They have won the election and they deserve the chance to make things better, but remember that there are no excuses now. If things don't improve, if the government doesn't get less intrusive and less expensive, then we will know where the heart of the Republican Party is and we will know that the GOP is not going to help us. They don't have a Democratic Senate or a Democratic President as an excuse. And with so many "moderates" (which William F. Buckley, Jr. once called "a base-stealing word for liberal Republicans") in the caucus and so many more hand-picked as candidates by Karl Rove, does anyone really think there is a chance that we will get much of our agenda passed?
So give the Republicans a chance, but don't get your hopes too high. And keep a close watch instead of blindly lining up behind anything the GOP proposes. It's not about party, it's about principles.

Come on, Bush pulls off something of historic proportions by putting his political credibility on the line. And takes the house and the senate; something not done for a 100 years.
Give the man credit for pulling of what NO-ONE thought would happen.

If you're saying the fight is not over, I'd be inclined to agree with you. Norm Coleman isn't my idea of a great choice, although I think he has an endearing manner and he might be open to learning where he's wrong. But heck if I was gonna chance my vote on a more conservative individual, say from the Constitution Party in MN, and risk having Mondale in what is now Norm's seat.

LOL!

What I would love to see is two major parties... the Republicans and the Constitution Party. *shrug* but it's going to be a long time coming, if it comes at all.

And you have to think, like AmericaUnited suggests, that at the very least, Bush might finally get some conservative judges approved.
But yes, we cannot relax now just because our 'party' has the reins. It t'aint that easy.
To: Terriergal
And Supreme Court justices too. Look for Rehnquist and O'Connor to retire shortly after new Senate is sworn in.
To: csmusaret
Yep that too.
