I did not see it that way. The ballot number is placed in a book that has your name in it. The book is only used to discover problems. I have no qualms about it. It has been done this way for a hundred years and no case that I know of has ever been brought against it for any reason.
I question the reason for changing the procedure. I smell a rat.

Damn Timesink, I forgot the most important part!
The ballot number is printed on the ballot stub only! The stub is torn off before the ballot goes in the box. They put the stub(no info on it) in a separate box. The ballot with no number on it anymore is then optically scanned and discarded, (some time after the election. The stubs are kept for fraud or whatever challeges.
There really is no privacy issue at all yet the rats made it into one.
