I saw someone just like the above picture of Joseph T. Kung in San Diego this morning! He had the hat with the Simon bumper stickers (I think there were Dump Davis stickers on it, too), and he had campaign pins and stickers all over his shirt. He was much more decorated today than he was in the above picture.

LOL!
Yes, you saw Joe Kung!
He told me this afternoon (at OLVERA STREET) that he was in San Diego this morning...
THAT is dedication!!!

I wish I had taken a picture of him, but there was a sea of people in the way. I got a whole bunch of stickers today, but I don't have the guts to wear them all at once. You're really dedicated, too! You seem to be posting all the time, plus you had all those eGray Hooker Freeps. I don't know how you have time to sleep!

The San Diego GOP rally went really well, and there weren't any Davis protesters there. Lots of citizens brought their own homemade signs to wave, in addition to the many campaign signs that many people got. It was a very enthusiastic crowd of hundreds of people. Someone started a chant that swept the crowd, "3 more days!"

At the Davis rally, however, there were only the standard red/black, difficult-to-read experience/values signs hanging on the chain-link fence with nobody willing to hold one or even be associated with the Davis signs outside the building. I didn't go inside the building, so I don't know about the energy level of the tiny group (50-60, as counted by some other people).

Three limousines went to the back entrance, as did two chartered buses. If you remember the Scottish Rite Center from your visit on Oct. 13th with Bill Simon and Rudy Giuliani, the Center is accessible only from that one road in front of the parking lot, Camino Del Rio South. Four protestors, including me, and an unrelated "Abortion Shame" bus ensured that most cars entering, exiting, or just driving by had to see at least one anti-Davis sign. I arrived late, and stayed over an hour. Davis was really late, and by the time he arrived, the other protesters and the bus were gone. I'm not sure if he saw me or not; it depends on which car he rode.

Dump Davis!

That LACK of passion on THEIR side, combined with the MASSIVE ENERGY on OUR side is why WE are going to win!

Simon Leads Davis by Three Points,
and the President Sends a Message

By Leo Lacayo

From the Campaign Trail:
Exclusive for CHRONWATCH.COM
As Bill Simon came down the stairs of his Boeing at the private air field in San Jose this past Saturday, I extended my hand to greet the next governor of the state of California.  Minutes before, Mr. Simon had been preceded by a bus full of the saddest people I have ever seen, the press corps that is accompanying him!

Simon turned and walked over to the landing-strip workers who had moved the stairs to his plane, and thanked them for their work.  The smiles lit up the faces of the hardworking guys who never get a thank you from the powerful moguls who descend on this particular center.  My mind went to last week, when I had greeted President Arroyo of the Philippines at Davies Symphony Hall and watched a dour-looking Gray Davis make a spectacle of himself.

Already on the bus were every major Republican candidate.  Bill got on, sat behind the driver, smiled, and asked how we were doing.  I sat in the seat immediately to his right.  I smiled thinking that if I were on a Democratic bus, I would be lucky to get the back of the bus, and had it been Gray Davis's bus, I might have been pushed out of the vehicle by two black shirts from the unions.  That may seem funny, but that's how some Californians must feel these days after four years of Davis!

It had been a busy week.  The San Jose Mercury News had interviewed me on the phone for half an hour, but the only thing they published was my call for all Californians to vote, regardless of party, lest we re-enforce the stereotype as spectators in the political arena.   Hours of work with Spanish language radio stations and some back-door work with Univision and Telemundo had yielded just enough so that I could get airtime for Alfredo Najera III, my fantastic vice-chair of the San Francisco chapter of the Hispanic Republican Assembly.

A week of telephone banking, and precinct walking with Republican legends, had yielded nothing short of good news for us.  Constant trips and phone conferencing had produced enough campaign literature and resources to continue the pressure on Gray Davis.  Two great news items had arrived.   First, studies showed a  whopping ten percent more Hispanics are identifying themselves as Hispanic Republicans rather than Democrats, making Latino voters the fastest growing segment of the party.

BILL SIMON LEADING!

The second  was a bulletin from Washington D.C. released Friday, showing that with four days left until the election, GOP nominee Simon has pulled to a statistical dead heat with Davis, who is unable to rose above the 45 percent approval mark in the governor's race.  My mind raced back to all the news I have seen on Davis's last days.  The only people at his rallies were union hacks,  and I knew that these guys didn't like Davis anymore than many slaves adored  the plantation owner's back in history!

An overnight Field Poll conducted on October 30 by the Polling Company, Inc., used likely voters in their sampling and found that Republican Bill Simon lead Gray Davis by three points, 42 to 39.  Even better for Bill and worse for Davis, was that the poll confirmed what all other polls and pundits already have, that Gray Davis has a negative rating of 57% among Californians likely to vote--the highest negative rating of any governor in the United States.

Yes! It's finally here, my exclusive account of last weekend's dramatic freep of Gray Davis! We almost get a SWAT team sent after us, and we manage to intimidate Gray Davis into noticing us -- right on video!

Yes, indeed, this one was a triumph for me - Garry South and Gray Davis in the same video, looking delightfully sleazy!

An initial set of photos is at my page on the freep. (Right now there's nothing but photos there).

I'm hoping to have the video done by tomorrow morning...

From the Sacramento Bee:

Governor, Simon pick up the pace

By Margaret Talev and Steve Wiegand -- Bee Staff Writers
Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Monday, November 4, 2002

LOS ANGELES -- With Democratic candidates for down-ticket races in tow, Gov. Gray Davis jetted across the state Sunday, urging supporters to go to the polls Tuesday and to vote the party line.

Republican gubernatorial hopeful Bill Simon, meanwhile, turned for support to U.S. senator, war hero and campaign reform guru John McCain, who urged voters to choose the candidate who will "restore respect to the office of governor."

The incumbent and his entourage were upbeat, with Davis comfortably ahead of Simon in the polls two days before the election.

Davis said he was "smart enough not to take anyone's vote for granted," but added, "I can see victory at the end of the tunnel."

He joked with reporters between stops: "I'd like to say to the enlightened Republicans, the election is on Tuesday, and to the die-hard Republicans, the election is on Thursday," he said.

Meanwhile, $4 million worth of mailers and telephone calls on behalf of the governor were making their way into the homes of 3 million Democrats who are either newly registered or irregular voters.

The recorded telephone messages feature former President Clinton; Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.; the governor's wife, Sharon; actor Martin Sheen; U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer; Magic Johnson; Jesse Jackson and United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta.

An additional $5 million was being spent by the state Democratic Party on get-out-the-vote efforts to benefit all candidates.

The governor's morning began at the West Angeles Cathedral in Los Angeles, where he told more than 2,000 members of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ that his administration focused on public education because "that's the great equalizer."

He described his political deeds as an extension of a religious upbringing.

"We are people of faith," he said of himself and his wife. "We understand we are here to do God's work."

Davis urged the crowd to vote, and added, in closing, "Praise the Lord."

Religion took a back seat to abortion, guns, unions and the environment at Davis' next stop, the Scottish Rite Temple in east San Diego.

There, Davis told a multiracial crowd of about 150 that he had expanded abortion rights, limited sales of guns and signed legislation curbing greenhouse gas emissions, expanding stem-cell research and creating a paid family leave program.

"Everyone says you're not going to turn out to vote," he told the San Diego crowd. "You know what I say? They've been spending too much time reviewing my opponent's voting record," a reference to Simon's own sporadic history of showing up at the polls.

Unable to get President Bush to campaign for him in the waning hours before Tuesday's election, Simon instead appeared with McCain before a crowd of about 200 Republican stalwarts in San Diego's Balboa Park.

"I'm here ... to support a fine and decent man, of decency and integrity and honesty who will restore respect to the office of governor," the Arizona senator said.

McCain, who for years has been the leading national advocate for campaign finance reform and who in March pushed a federal reform bill through Congress, also targeted Simon's opponent for a stinging attack.

He said Davis had "put a 'For Sale' sign on the Governor's Office of the state of California, in violation of everything I've ever stood for and believed in ... it's wrong, it's wrong what he's done." He called Davis' fund-raising practices "a disgrace."

McCain, a Vietnam War hero who promised to rally veterans' groups on Simon's behalf, was something of a surrogate for Bush.

The president, who was opposed by McCain in the 2000 presidential primaries and who has been a reluctant supporter of campaign finance reform, launched a 17-city, 15-state swing Thursday for Republican candidates. None of them are residents of California.

The White House decision to ignore California comes in the wake of polls that show GOP candidates trailing up and down the ballot.

Davis declined to respond to McCain's criticism.

"I'm not going to get into a tit-for-tat with Senator McCain," Davis told reporters.

"I'm not running against him," he said. "I'm running against someone who is a failed businessman, who didn't vote in 13 out of the last 20 elections and who is against issues people care about. I believe people will respond to our message of progress and turn out to vote for me and for the Democratic ticket."

Davis also stopped at a voter rally at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and ended the day campaigning in Oakland.

Simon ended his campaign day with an appearance at Los Angeles' historic Olvera Street, where he was greeted by the largest and most ethnically diverse crowd of his weekend safari.

In addition to giving his standard stump speech and introducing the rest of the ticket, Simon and his wife, Cindy, enthusiastically jumped and jived to a band called Lip Service, singing along to tunes like "Domino" (Simon's favorite song) and "Play That Funky Music."

Um, Maggie - the name of the band was "HIP Service", not "LIP Service."

And, in the future, please expand upon THIS apparent contradiction:

The governor's morning began at the West Angeles Cathedral in Los Angeles, where he told more than 2,000 members of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ that his administration focused on public education because "that's the great equalizer."

He described his political deeds as an extension of a religious upbringing.

"We are people of faith," he said of himself and his wife. "We understand we are here to do God's work."

Davis urged the crowd to vote, and added, in closing, "Praise the Lord."

Religion took a back seat to abortion, guns, unions and the environment at Davis' next stop, the Scottish Rite Temple in east San Diego...

...focused on public education because "that's the great equalizer."

Yea... it's the great equalizer, it makes all the kids equally stupid.

God... I pray Davis is given the boot tomorrow!

WOW! What a great sendoff for tomorrow's election!

This was a high-energy event, and I was there to capture it all on video! A fantastic band with great music, a capacity crowd of hundreds, and an infectious high-energy spirit wrapped up my event video making with flair!

No boring speech warning needed for this one - Bill Simon had the crowd at his fingertips, and the band made a great backing. Compared to the Pasadena event for Davis, this was a lot more fun, a lot higher energy, and the speeches were even entertaining!

Relive this great event by checking out the video!
