A bear climbed a 6 foot fence and destroyed 7 of my bird feeders Thursday night. I live in the Eureka Ca city limits. I'm still looking for a way to discourage these pests from my yard short of killing them. Fish and Game will give me a permit to shoot but I have to dispose of the critter.

We don't shoot our black bears here in Florida. In fact we build tunnels beneath the roadways so they won't get run down by tourists from New Jersey.

In fact we build tunnels beneath the roadways Don't laugh. In Maryland this is true although for deer. A major bridge was just built for the 28-198 connector specifically for deer to cross a state road **UNDER** the road rather than by walking across the road. Never mind that deer cross the road in places other than the tunnel all of the time. As people who LOVE to pay MASSIVE tax bills we gladly footed the bill for this EXPENSIVE bridge. Barf...
Stupidity runs amock on MD.

I had a brown bear trot past yesterday while I was out on the deck for a much needed smoke break. It paid no attention to me. It did get my heart rate up for a few minutes.

It's unfortunate, but the black bear incidents here in New Jersey are climbing, especially in Warren and Sussex counties.
For the most part they do little harm if left to their own devices....but the development of the northern and northwestern parts of the state have slowly displaced their roaming range which can encompass around 100 square miles.
I had one near my backpacking campsite last year on the Jersey portion of the AT. He just wanted to sniff around and see if I was stupid enough not to bear bag my food.
They are without a doubt, a wild animal, who are slowly being taught to enjoy the feasts often found in dumpsters, trash cans, and the occasional idiot hiker who cooks his meal right next to his tent.

It also true here in Fl. We actually built underpasses for the black bears. Makes the PETA crowd feel good. and it doesn't cost them a cent.

Dispose? Geez' man, that's good meat. Plus, you can have the head mounted or make a nice rug out of the pelt.
Surely there must be a hunter in the area that can help you out with the "disposing".

Surely there must be a hunter in the area that can help you out with the "disposing".Depredation Permits do not allow personal consumpion but there are several approved groups that can take them. The problem is Bears are shot late at night when they are active.
Fish and Game no longer traps Bears and relocates them because they are over populated and not enough virgin range for them.
