Feds Seeking Links Between D.C. Sniper and Radical Islam

WASHINGTON Federal authorities have begun investigating whether Washington sniper John Allen Muhammad may have been motivated not only by personal fury or greed, but also by a militant strain of Islam.
Various press reports say federal agents are chasing down possible ties between Muhammad and Islamic terrorist organizations, while some pundits and at least one Jewish organization are pointing to a tantalizing series of reports suggesting Muhammad was influenced by militant religious ideology. Among the leads being pursued are indications that Muhammad may have been influenced by a militant offshoot of the Nation of Islam whose members call themselves "God."
Speculation about a possible religious motive for the shootings increased this week after Tacoma, Wash., police linked Muhammad to a shooting at a synagogue there in May. Tacoma police say Muhammad had access to the handgun likely used when two shots were fired at the synagogue, which was thought to be empty at the time. Rabbi Mark Glickman of Tacoma's Temple Beth El told the Forward that when he found a bullet embedded in the ark that contains the temple's Torah scrolls, he thought it was the work of local white supremacists. "They have vandalized our temple twice before," Glickman said.
Law enforcement agents also say that a letter found two weeks ago near a restaurant in Ashland, Va., where one of the shootings occurred, had striking similarities to the discourse of a militant offshoot of the Nation of Islam. The group, known as the Five Percent Nation of Gods and Earth, or Five Percenters, refers to black men as "Gods" and to black women as "Earths." The expression "I am God," which was found written on a tarot card near another shooting site, and which Muhammad reportedly used in his phone calls to police, is common among Five Percenters. So is the phrase "Word is Bond," also found on the Ashland letter. The phrase is the title of at least two rap songs performed by groups known to be linked to the Five Percenters.
Muhammad, who officially changed his name from Williams just 18 months ago, was a member of the Nation of Islam at least since 1997, as confirmed last week in a press conference held by the movement's leader, Reverend Louis Farrakhan.
A witness in Bellingham, Wash., reportedly told FBI investigators that he had heard Muhammad and his alleged accomplice, Lee Malvo, complaining that America's foreign policy punishes Muslims around the world, and opining that the September 11 terrorist attacks were overdue.
Among the pundits urging the media and authorities to investigate links between Muhammad and terrorist groups is Michael Ledeen, a resident scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.
In an article published Monday in the online edition of the National Review, Ledeen describes Muhammad as a "a perfect target for recruitment" by militant Islamic groups. He writes that the Foreign Ministry of Antigua, where Muhammad was a sometime resident, is investigating Muhammad "for ties to a smuggling and fake-document operation." Ledeen asks "whether we shouldn't consider the possibility that Muhammad is part of something bigger, something more organized, something more frightening."
Another conservative pundit, Daniel Pipes of Philadelphia's Middle East Forum, also distributed a column this week criticizing the media for ignoring possible links between Muhammad and militant Islam, instead focusing on reports of his "stormy relationship" with his family and psychological theories about his motivations.
"None of this is to say that American Muslims cannot be patriotic citizens, and plenty of them are," Pipes writes. "It is to say that when Muslims engage in terrorism against Americans, the guiding presumption must be that they see themselves as warriors in a jihad against the 'Great Satan.'"
Wow! These Fed boys are quick. I wonder what clue or tip led them to suspect that Muhammad might have something to do with Islam?
As I mentioned before as well the DU already claims that a white man did the killings and these guys are being framed. All setup by Bush of course...
