What Would Screwtape Say?
Breakpoint ^ | 10/31/2002 | Stuart Buck

My fellow devils, students, and masters of the Training College, I salute you on this important occasion in honor of the most recent graduating class. I am glad to step into the shoes of the once respected Screwtape (now providing a nourishing meal to Our Father Below). Let all of you headed for the earth take heed of Screwtape's example—a long and illustrious career that nevertheless ended in devastating loss to our cause when, by means we have yet to identify, a human stumbled on, and published, a series of letters written by Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood.

[It goes on from there.]

What that TV is a total waste of time? Which is what I think the gist of the article is.

We are lucky that no one reads Aristotle anymore, or they might remember that actions and thoughts, if repeated, become habits, and habits in turn become either virtue or sin. But of course, Aristotle is not as entertaining as television.

Nice article with a good point. Thanks for posting.

However, many readers (especially the younger ones) will have no idea who Screwtape is. C.S. Lewis's "The Screwtape Letters" is unknown to most Americans today.

A pity. They would learn a lot if they took the time to read and understood it. Guess they would have to turn off the TV to do that though.

So sorry to learn of Screwtape's unfortunate demise. (NOT!!!) Would that the same would befall certain other of our more famous "devils" out there.... Can you imagine Bill or Hill as a first course for "Our Father Below?" Tasty morsels!!!!

Why Screwtape would say something like this:

"Everything is going according to plan. We have had successful operations over these past many decades eliminating those standards from which the stupid American Founding Fathers based all their laws, those unfair and ridiculous "Ten Commandments."

“We also see how the removal of God from public life has allowed us to infiltrate the humans’ thinking all the more quickly, as once this obstacle was removed, it has allowed us to make the humans feel and believe just how much more important they are than a god they cannot hear or touch. Continue promoting the self-esteem classes in schools across America, they are serving me well.

“Tell the demons they must continue dividing these people into groups and factions, sub-groups and sub-factions. You know and have learned well that old saying, 'a house divided cannot stand.' We have done an adequate job, but there is still much more to do. Ensure no group is overlooked. Each must feel their needs are unmet or are intentionally overlooked. Continue to pit one against another. Do not allow logical discourse on this subject. We must incite their feelings of supposed wrongs, discrimination, etc., as this will create further divisions among these stupid Americans.

"I am more than pleased with that political party called, "democrats." My demons have done a most excellent job and they shall receive an extra special reward for their diligence. The "memorial" rally for that man Wellstone could not have been better planned. Imagine something like that happening even 40 years ago; I would not have imagined it possible. Not was there a mere hundreds of people chanting that night, but it numbered to the thousands: smiling, chanting, and screaming for victory to their party.....I find this well pleasing. This democrat party displayed no sacrosanctness for their "so dearly departed." Hah! Well done.

"I am especially pleased with my demon in charge of that other democrat, Bob Mulholland who even said, on their national television program, The Factor, that “this only happens once in a life time, right before an election, being able to have a rally like this."

"Yes, all this bespeaks the way many hearts have changed from believing there is right and wrong....in fact, they are finally starting to believe that wrong is right, and this is a very good sign."

Hmmmm, I'm one of those who had never heard of it. However, seeing as my husband and I think that cable is a waste of money and can't even get enough reception in oour tin can for the local stations, I'm sure I'll have an opportunity to read it.
