I think John Pershing did this to the Moro Islamic fanatics in the Philippines in the early 1900s. It calmed them the f*ck down pretty fast. The return of the .45 (Long) Colt single action revolvers to replace the newly issued .38 special revolvers helped too, I'm sure.

It wasn't the .38 Special, it was the even weaker .38 Long Colt. They pulled the old Colt .45 Peacemakers out of storage and sent them to the PI.
