If tools of hunting weren't used 40,000 years ago, how did that wooley mammoth wind up with an atlatl spear point -complete with flaking tool marks - wedged between its verterbrae ?

Timeline please. Wooley mammoths still lived up until 10-15000 years ago, but I have seen no evidence of intelligent and social hunters living 40000 years ago. Perhaps you may enlighten me with some Neanderthal insight into this social hunting party, especially one located in India. I may need to rewrite some textbooks.
