Police believe three suspects in the Bali bombings may be part of a larger group of up to ten people.

Police have released detailed sketches of the three men.

Numerous witnesses have told police they saw one or more of the men near the Sari Club on the night it was bombed.

Two of the men are of Indonesian appearance, possibly with Javanese accents.

The other man is of unknown ethnicity.

They are aged between their early 20s and 30s.

The police say they have reason to believe the men are part of a bigger group of people, which included those who planned, organised and carried out the bombings.

But police say there is still no firm evidence the men are connected to the extremist Islamic group Jemaah Islamiah, or its leader Abu Bakar Bashir, whose base is in eastern Java.

They say one of the men could have expertise in bomb detonation and could possibly be a former army officer.

The profiles were built from evidence and statements from numerous witnesses, including many in Australia.

Cremation ceremony

Bali's Hindu community is planning a mass cremation ceremony next month to mark the deaths of many Balinese in the bombings.

It is expected to coincide with a cleansing ceremony once the debris is cleared away.

About one third of the bomb victims could be Indonesians, many of them local Balinese who were working in the area.

The local Hindu community has scheduled a cremation ceremony to coincide with another event in mid-November to cleanse the bomb site of evil spirits.

Local authorities say where a body has not been found, Hindu families may substitute a symbol such as a doll for cremation.

Forty-eight Australian victims have so far been positively identified, leaving 41 who are presumed dead.
