Nathanson allegations against Davis unsealed
The Sacramento Bee (ugh, I know, but they pursued it) ^ | Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Tuesday, October 29, 2002 | Denny Walsh and Sam Stanton

Nearly 10 years after they were first leveled, accusations against Gov. Gray Davis were unsealed Monday. They portray him as aggressively pushing for coastal projects so he could pursue contributions from developers and others seeking permits.

The accusations, which the governor and his supporters have consistently denied, were never investigated after being provided to Sacramento federal prosecutors by a convicted felon starting in 1993.

"The governor is not going to have an argument with a convicted felon and admitted perjurer," Davis political consultant Garry South said. "The charges are false."

Prosecutors have said that the alleged actions by Davis, even if they occurred, may not have been illegal. Davis, as an assemblyman and state controller, had no authority over Coastal Commission matters or appointments.

The documents were unsealed by U.S. District Judge Lawrence K. Karlton after a three-year legal battle by The Bee to gain access to them. The Bee began reporting Mark L. Nathanson's allegations more than two years ago. Nathanson went to prison in 1993 for extorting payments from people seeking permits to build on the Southern California coast.

The letters reveal the names of people who had business before the Coastal Commission and whom Nathanson claims Davis discussed as potential or past contributors. Two of the people named have contributed to Davis campaigns while he was an assemblyman and controller. No record of contributions from a third person was found, but Monday that person told The Bee he may have contributed a few hundred dollars to Davis.

The documents depict Davis as a career politician who met regularly with Nathanson at a Beverly Hills restaurant -- when Davis was an assemblyman and later when he was controller -- to strategize about soliciting contributions from some of the state's most prominent developers and others after they had won approval of variance applications before the Coastal Commission.

For the rest, go here.

Much as I despise and loathe The Bee, they did pursue this for three years.

If you want excellent commentary and can do it, listen to Eric Hogue RIGHT NOW (5-9 am PST) on 1380 KTKZ in Sacramento.

"The governor is not going to have an argument with a convicted felon and admitted perjurer," Davis political consultant Garry South said.

But he'll go to a fundraiser with an admitted perjurer and probable felon...

My very thought, instantly. What a straight-line. These people are UTTERLY un-self-aware.

Developers? I though Davis was an environmental man. Looks like the man has two faces, aye?
What will the green weenies say about this? Isn't he one of their earthly pagen Gods?

These people are UTTERLY un-self-aware.

Just like Hillary saying Bush was selected, not elected ... at a fundraiser for Jean Carnahan. It's really a bizarre phenomenon - they can utter this nonsense with both a straight face and no apparant awareness for the absolute irony of what they are saying.

It will if the media gives it half the legs it gave Simon's last silly little gaffe.

Two days of as intense coverage should be enough, but I've got a feeling this story won't last the day.

So just why were these documents sealed up in the first place? Oh, I get it! Silly me. They do these things for democRATs.

If it had been a republican, the judge would have invited the media in for a free-for-all broadcasting of every allegation.

If I get it right, when these reports say that "prosecutors" did not deem this worthy of pursuit, I think those are Janet Reno's prosecutors. Anyone know?

As I have said many times, the Democrats (and people who vote for them) care more about what the candidate will do for them as opposed to how they do it. Some of the worst totalitarian governments were/are "liberal" [China, USSR, Khmer Rouge, even Nazi Germany had a large socialist agenda]. Soooooooo, don't be shocked when the Dems ignore horrors of their own (but weep and scream at the slightest transgression by the Republicans). Remember when Hillary thought they we should get rid of the Electoral College (because she thinks that it overemphasizes rural versus urban areas)? Someone pointed out to her that the U.S. is a constitutional republic and not a democracy. She didn't care - she wants to change how we vote so her party can win. Watch out!

Click here to download the California Republican Liberty Caucus' tri-fold pamphlet on the governor's race!

It's a .pdf file, so you'll need Acrobat Reader... it's free, and chances are good you already have it on your computer. Try the link and see.

Print it using the printer-icon button in the Acrobat toolbar in your browser (not File|Print in your browser's menu). It's intended for double-sided printing using single pieces of paper-- no stapling needed if you do it that way, and saves trees! ;-) Print one side, then invert the paper and feed it through a second time for the second side. Fold, and sally forth to get out the vote!

Give this to friends, walk your neighborhood, take it to stores, give a wad of 'em to your school, hand some out at your house of worship, at clubs, at stores and small businesses...

Let's retire Gray Davis!

Let's show the media and RINOs that "It's the base, stupid!"

Let's show Gray Davis that money can't buy him love ...or re-election!

Freepers and RLC activists can claim considerable credit for nominating Bill Simon, so now let's elect him!

And he'll take the word of a convicted felon over Bill Simon ... remember that the lawsuit against Simon's company (not against Simon himself) that Davis plastered all over the airwaves AND was subsequently thrown out by the judge, was brought to court BY a convicted felon.

I guess it's all who the convicted felon is accusing ...
