ITHACA -- Richard Sabol's customers come to the Ithaca Farmers' Market to buy his potatoes and garlic because his produce is tasty and local, and because they like the farming methods he uses.

Sabol's customers know that he doesn't use any synthetic pesticides, genetically modified seeds or sewage sludge as fertilizer. His methods don't pose a threat to the environment, and compared to much larger operations, he farms lightly on the land.

used little or no chemicals...its quite unnecessary since the time between pic and sell is so short.

If you are buying organic on that basis, you are being dupped. Herbicides are used during planting and pesticides during the growing season.

A true organic truck farm is extremely labor intensive, I would be willing to bet those true ones are using illegal manuel labor.

I do not know enough about the "organic" issue, nor the efforts of the local 'organic' farmers to get an organic standard to write a cogent, informative, and effective letter or I would.

We have farmers markets all over the place down here, which I frequent a great deal. Not to mention this is farm country. But the organic issue is non-existent here.

This place needs and edit button. It would be nice, but then people would be able to edit things that they wish they didnt say, or to edit comments that are being used against them.

Now spell check is something I need!

For Bill Bey, of Unexpected Farm in Watkins Glen, his garlic and asparagus are "veganic," which means he has used no synthetic pesticides or animal products on his fields, he said.

Perhaps he could boost sales by labeling his cucumbers "orgasmic".

I love it when these whiny liberals, insisting on "organically-grown" produce open up an ear of pesticide-free corn and discover it half eaten by a writhing, organically-grown worm!

You are dead on target. Organic is a big rip off.

Look, if you had any taste and sense of smell you could not eat a chicken raised in the concentration camp and fed on chemicals with antibiotics. Have you ever wondered where all those cases of cancer come from?
