Whatever the press says, the resolution to this crisis was much better than anyone expected. Those of us who were monitoring this situtation all last week expected 80+% casualties.

Those terrorists wanted to make a statement by their deaths. Ironically they did: Don't mess with Spetsnaz.

I didn't have the opportunity to keep up with as I would have liked to. Brief reports I did hear claimed that all but one of the terrorists were killed by Russian forces that stormed the theatre. If they used a gas powerful enough to knock out and kill some of the hostages, why didn't the gas have the same effect, proportionately, on the terrorists? Were they wearing gas masks anticipating this type of retaliation?
