Race-hate thugs terrorise Muslims in Sidney

Police in Australia say there have been more than 40 attacks on Muslims in Sydney since the Bali bombing that killed nearly 200 people.

Clerics have been spat on, mosques vandalised and Muslim girls have had their headscarves ripped off since the bombings.

New South Wales state Police Commissioner Ken Moroney said: "It's offensive, and it illustrates an element of ignorance and arrogance on their (the attackers') part."

Dozens of Australians died when a massive explosion ripped through a nightclub popular with foreign tourists in the beach-side Bali resort of Kuta.

The main suspect in the attack is south east Asian Islamic extremist group Jemaah Islamiyah, which is believed to have links with al-Qaida.

Commissioner Moroney says more attacks are probably going unreported, particularly on Muslim women who fear retribution if they tell authorities.

"These Muslim women need to come forward without fear of repercussions and talk to police so we can get a clear picture of what is going on," he said.

He did not give more details on the various anti-Islamic attacks but last Tuesday, vandals smashed several windows and walls of the King Abdul Aziz Islamic School in western Sydney. The adjoining mosque and Muslim leader's residence also were damaged.

Also last week, a mosque in the southern city of Melbourne was firebombed.

Police have made no arrests in any of the attacks.

All in all it sounds pretty mild. No blood spilled. And unless the spitter has AIDS, there has been no physical harm done.

Considering they number of dead Australians, I think the Aussies are showing great restraint. (As are we Americans)

You are right, it is pretty mild. The media try to whip up excitement with lurid reports - i.e. that a mosque had been "fire bombed" - and it was some little firelight thing that burnt on the floor for a few hours before someone put it out. Most of the goons who do this type of thing would normally be vandalising trains, or something. It is totally on the fringe.
