The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home
.
.
A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.
.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Toad Suck Daze
Long ago, steamboats traveled the
Arkansas River when the water was
at the right depth. When it wasn't, the
captains and their crew tied up to wait
where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now
spans the river.
While they waited, they refreshed themselves
at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the
folks living nearby, who said: "They suck on
the bottle 'til they swell up like toads." Hence,
the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone,
but the legend and fun live on at Toad Suck Daze.

He sure did sing some good songs. He sure did! I remember listening to Conway Twitty before I knew he was country. Sometime around 1959 or 60 I saw him at a place called Devil's Lake Pavilion in Michigan. And, I don't think I'm dreaming this, but I believe Peggy Lee was there also.
Speaking of singers from Arkansas, we can't forget - - raising my voice to a high pitch - - Glen "The Rhinestone Cowboy" Campbell from Delight Arkansas.

Good Saturday evening everyone! What a beautiful autumn day it is in Arkansas for Liberty R&R.
Howdy troops, veterans, and allies scattered around the country and the globe. Thank You so much for your service!! I hope you're all enjoying the day in Arkansas. That's some gorgeous countryside to relax in and wander through, isn't it?
I wanted to get here earlier today but since we got the computer up and going, I've kinda let things slide around here. (giggle) I figured I'd better do a little house-cleaning before my dear hubby puts a padlock on the 'puter to keep me off of it. oooooooh nooooo! Now it's time to go out for our usual Sat. night supper so I can't stay. I WILL be back later tonight. Y'all enjoy the evening and I'll see you soon.

Way to go, Linda! You must be on cloud 9. My son went through Army jump school last month and told me of the thrill of it all. Also, I believe George HW Bush is coming up on his 80th birthday and he promised he would jump then. He made one on his 75th. Congratulations on jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. I think.

Ooooooh, Linda! I can't believe you really jumped! My stomach turned flip-flops as read your post. My hair's still standing on end. LOL!!
It sounds like you had a blast! It's an experience you'll never forget, I'm sure.....even if the memory of it is a little blurry. I'm proud of you, lady. You've got a lot more guts than I do. There's a part of me that would love to give it a try but the other (stronger) part says, "No way in h---! hahaha! Good going, Linda!!!!

Not Peggy Lee. I meant Patsy Cline. Anyway, it was a long time ago.

Thank you sweetness!! What a compliment! I hope the troops like it!
As for jumping out of a plane, I'll have my opportunity to say "yes" in March. I've already done the Bungee jumping in Guam and that was AWESOME!! Woohoo!! Linda is such a good example!!

Growing up on the Ohio-Indiana border, I always hated that Indiana never had to change their time. However, I grew up and it came in handy when I was "manuvering" around curfews. LOL!
