'God's banker murdered in Mafia plot' (GODFATHER PART III ALERT)

Roberto Calvi, the Italian banker who was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge, London in 1982, did not commit suicide but was murdered, Italian magistrates have concluded.

Calvi was known as "God's banker" because he was head of the Vatican-controlled Banco Ambrosiano.

The findings of a four-year investigation officially support long-held suspicions that Calvi was killed after fleeing Rome, where he faced arrest, for London in an attempt to save his foundering bank.

The investigation, based on forensic tests on Calvi's exhumed body, is likely to strengthen the suspicions of Rome magistrates that he was the victim of a plot involving secret freemasonry and organised crime.

The report claims that Calvi was killed in a builders' yard near to Blackfriars Bridge. His killers then took his body by boat to scaffolding beneath the bridge over the Thames, where they strung him from a noose.

But the banker's hands had dragged on the ground, scratching his fingernails and picking up building debris.

There also had been no signs of "bone lesions of the cervical tract", which are usual when a person is hanged, experts said. At first, a London Coroner had ruled in favour of suicide, but a later hearing delivered an open verdict.

Earlier this week an informer told investigators that Calvi and Vatican officials had been involved in a money-laundering operation for the Mafia in 1981.

Magistrates believe Calvi was killed in retaliation for mismanaging the plot and failing to return on demand £175 million which the Mafia had entrusted to his bank.

The book that I read about this suggests that Calvi or someone high up in the bank was actually in with the Mafia in swapping out forged bonds for for the real paper that was just lying around in the Vatican bank--and that it amounted to a theft of over $250 million.

Of course that scandal was hushed up, but possibly John Paul I got wind of this and was silenced--murdered by Mafia/Freemason elements. The P3 Freemason society in Italy is a powerful Who's Who of Businessmen, the Military, and even a number of Catholic Priests. John Paul I was getting to the bottom of that too. He made way too many powerful enemies too quick.

The final nail in his coffin: He was about to reverse the Church's outmoded prohibition of Birth Control. As the Archbishop of Venice (or Milan), Albino Luciani was part of a commission studying this matter for the Vatican. After their findings were published, members of the Curia completely reversed the Commission's findings without notifying anyone else.

Everything I've heard about JP I was that there were health questions around him even before he was elected. Worse, he forgot to take his medicines.

The fact that the Vatican didn't speak up about this apparently led to the air of scandal which you accurately describe.

As for Calvi, he got burned playing with Mafiosi and the Vatican's money. He should have known better.
