Lautenberg To Women Voters: "I Don't Want To Talk To You"

- (TRENTON, OCTOBER 25) -- U.S. Senate candidate Doug Forrester held a news conference outside the WPVI-TV 6 studios in Trenton today during the time when the League of Women Voters, WABC-TV 7, and WPVI-TV 6 had invited him and Frank Lautenberg to debate. Instead, Doug stood next to a vacant podium with Lautenberg's name on it. Doug Forrester issued the following statement:
-
- "At this very moment, Frank Lautenberg is supposed to be debating me -- at this very studio at the League of Women Voters' debate sponsored by WPVI and WABC TV, but 'Any-Where, Any-Time Frank' refused.
-
- "In a disturbing twist, Mr. Lautenberg told NJN yesterday, he's doing 'three debates in a period of really three weeks.' After nearly a month of stalling on debates, this is really astounding, considering that his campaign has only reluctantly agreed to TWO debates -- on WNBC-TV with Gabe Pressman and on News Channel 12.
-
- "Which of the other eight debates that he has been stalling on has he now agreed to? The one with WCBS-TV's Marcia Kramer on Sunday? NBC's 'Meet the Press?' The Herald News / The Record of Hackensack debate for broadcast on UPN-TV 9? How about giving South Jersey a chance, with the Comcast / Millenium Radio / Gannet Town Hall debate at Rowan University in Glassboro? Or maybe NOW he wants to go on NJ 101.5 FM, even though it aired on Wednesday -- when I sat next to an empty chair with Mr. Lautenberg's name on it.
-
- "When Frank Lautenberg told the League of Women Voters to 'forget it,' he was sending a clear message to the women of New Jersey: 'I don't want to talk to you.'
-
- "Well, I do. And as your U.S. Senator, I'll fight everyday to improve your lives and the lives of your families.
-
- "The women of New Jersey deserve a Senator who will show up, one who will listen to their concerns -- not one who will duck every opportunity, and leave an empty podium"
