California: Politicos will tout UC Merced, but it's mostly a boondoggle

MERCED -- Those who are staging today's "inauguration and founding celebration" for the University of California campus on the outskirts of this San Joaquin Valley city didn't mean to do it, but the timing, content and locale of the ceremony unwittingly reveal much about the project's real meaning.

California is projected to receive an inrease of 700k students into the CCC, CSU, UC system this decade. 85% will go into the CCC system. The UC system will receive a 65k increase. It will cost 40 million dollars to get UC Merced to the level where it can handle 5,000 students by 2010. UC Merced is also a slap to Latinos. The reason it was built in a small town like Merced is that it was meant to cater to college age children of migrant workers. The state feels these students wouldn't travel far from home.
