Survey Iowa 13: The U.S. Senate Race

Des Moines, October 23, 2002 - A number of prominent leaders have visited Iowa to campaign for Greg Ganske. But the visits have apparently given no lingering boost to Ganske's senate campaign against democrat Tom Harkin.

Survey Iowa 13 data shows Harkin extending his lead to 17 percent over his challenger. Four percent of respondents have shifted from Ganske to Harkin in the last two weeks.

Harkin has gained with men. He's up four percent since October ninth, while Ganske has lost five percent.

Harkin has also improved his standing with female voters. He has risen four percent while Ganske has fallen three percent.

Harkin has improved in every age category, showing particular strength with adults between 35 and 54. He has gained four percent in that category, while Ganske has declined three percent.

Ganske's campaign staff says internal polls show a much tighter race. Harkin's campaign says while the numbers look good, they are not taking anything for granted and they still expect a close race.

One-thousand central Iowans were called at random to participate in Survey Iowa 13, 754 of those called actually took the survey. The margin of error in this Survey Iowa 13 poll is 4.1 percent.

WHO is the NBC (Never Been Correct) affiliate in Des Moines. They backed Vladimir Lenin for this senate seat until someone told them he was dead.

Even MY DOG knows a truely accurate poll is taken of likely voters rather than making calls randomly.

Well, assuming the poll has any validity, and it probably doesn't because it probably just added up the totals, rather than make sure the sample reflected likely voters and what the partisan balance will be of those likely voters, I assume central Iowa includes Des Moines (Ganske's CD), and Ganske needs to run close to even there to win this thing.

I live in Southeast Iowa and have received an average of 1-2 glossy brochures sent out by Dems for Harkin in the mail DAILY!! They must have a zillion dollars to spend on Dung-Heap Tom. I really hate that man (oops, hate crime).

The Iowa City Press Citizen is even more liberal than the Des Moines Register, if that is possible!!! Is in the town that houses the University of Iowa, the most liberal institution in the state.

... called at random ... 74% responded ...

Ha Ha Ha .. no kidding. Interesting Senator Dungheap only leads by 17 among random [adult? registered? voters?] Des Moines demos. There may be hope for the good Dr. Ganske after all. Still looking for that advert filmed outside Senator Dungheap's Bahama domicile.

Too bad Bill Salier's campaign wasn't undercut by the national GOP.... he was a much better candidate than Ganske.

This poll is being reported inaccurately in this article.

Of 1000 Adults interviewed, 871 were registered voters,

Of those 871, 754 were deemed "likely voters" based on their answers to screening questions.

Of those 754, 57% said they would vote for Harkin, 40% for Ganske.

The poll was conducted over a 3-day period, with numbers that were busy or no-answer being retried both on the same day and on subsequent days.

An IDENTICALLY CONDUCTED poll 2 weeks ago had Harkin up by 53-44. Whatever you think of the accuracy of the overall numbers, it is certainly true that things have moved in a Democratic direction in this race.

Go to SurveyUSA.com tomorrow and a link to a .pdf file of the entire poll with all the crosstabs and supporting data will be available.

You are hearing this from the person who directed the poll.
