NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Health-conscious men looking to settle down in more hale and hearty environs need to look no further than Honolulu, Hawaii, according to a new survey from Men's Health magazine, which ranked the island paradise number 1 in its latest "best and worst" cities list.
Rounding out the top five "healthiest" cities for men after Honolulu are San Jose, California; Rochester, New York; Santa Ana, California and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The top five "unhealthiest" cities in the US for men, according to the magazine, are Atlanta, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Memphis, Tennessee.
Men's Health rated 101 US cities on a variety of different variables that affect a man's health, including prevalence of heart disease and prostate cancer (news - web sites), as well as car accidents, air quality and physical fitness levels.
"The category results were weighted, totaled and averaged to come up with a final ranking," according to a press release from the magazine.
Among other findings, the survey revealed that Boston is home to the leanest population while San Antonio, Texas, boasts the fattest residents.
Levels of prostate cancer top out in New Orleans, while men in San Francisco have the lowest levels of the disease.
The state of California snagged both the highest amount of car accidents--in Fresno--and the fewest, in Sacramento
Last but not least, single men may be eager to learn that the survey found the largest number of "young, single women" per man in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
"Women still outlive men by about 7 years," David Zinczenco, editor-in-chief of Men's Health, said in a prepared statement. "We're trying to increase those odds by lifting up the cities that are model areas of good health for men as well as pointing out those places that need to do a better job."
Interesting. Prostate cancer related to testosterone levels.
Beats me.
Men in San Francisco don't even have protate glands...
