New poll says Doyle's still ahead, barely [WI Governor]

New poll says Doyle's still ahead, barely

Scott Milfred State government reporter

The horse race for governor hasn't changed much despite last week's barrage of criminal charges against top lawmakers, the latest We the People/Wisconsin poll suggests.

Democratic candidate for governor Jim Doyle leads Republican Gov. Scott McCallum by 8 percentage points in the statewide poll conducted Sunday and Monday.

A previous We the People/Wisconsin poll conducted in the same way Oct. 4-7 had given Doyle a 7 percentage-point lead.

"The charges last week really haven't moved anything very much," said Don Kettl, a UW-Madison political science professor. "The number of undecideds are shrinking, but that happens anyway" near the end of most campaigns.

If anything, Libertarian candidate for governor Ed Thompson may have enjoyed a slight boost, the professor said.

Kettl added that it's hard to draw too much from the poll because the margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points. That means, in theory, Doyle and McCallum could be running neck and neck if the poll were repeated, or perhaps Doyle might hold an even larger lead.

The latest poll put Doyle at 46 percent, McCallum at 38 percent, Thompson at 8 percent and Green Party candidate Jim Young at 3 percent.

"The real issue here has been how hard it's been for McCallum to move his numbers," Kettl said, noting that more poll respondents view McCallum negatively than positively.

We the People/Wisconsin is a media partnership including the Wisconsin State Journal.

We'll have to see if today's charges of vote fraud/bribery involving Doyle actually have legs and/or impact the polls. McCallum needs all the help he can get.

I wonder whether the Channel 4 expose on Doyle's people plying the mentally retarded (challenged) with cookies and then herding them into a room full of absentee ballots will matter. Democraps like *Doyle who stoop to those measures are despicable.

W ought to be reading Tommy Thompson the riot act about his brother. McCallum is not the perfect candidate, but he's been hammered over budget issues that he inherited, that were largely created by the demonrats. Absent a libertarian candidate with Thompson's name recognition, it would be a dead heat.

Ed Thompson 2002

Yeah, that's effing brilliant. He has no chance of winning. He's just a spoiler who's trying to lose the governor's mansion for the Republican party, which has been the only counterbalance to the cronyist politics of the democrats. A vote for Thompson is a vote for Doyle, and the evil political machine that is responsible for making Wisconsin an economic backwater with the third highest tax rate in the country, where high wage corporate and manufacturing jobs are driven out, and are replaced by low wage crap jobs in services or distribution.

Anyone who would vote for Thompson is either:
a) evil
or
b) an idiot

Which one are you?

(B) An idiot.

Better to vote for Thompson (remember, they said the same thing about Ventura) than to have another 4 years of RINO Republicanism (excuse me, but which political party has been in control of the Governorship since '86?)

Thompson will not win, comparisons to Ventura notwithstanding. Is McCallum perfect? No, but he's acceptable, especially once the obstructionist Chuck "Lizard" Chvala is out of the picture, and we can actually push things through the legislature.

OTOH, if Doyle wins, we can look forward to:
-higher taxes
-the corrupt Doyle Democratic Machine will control the entire state, to include solidifying their grip on state agencies, as well as on the election process
-an even more hostile anti-business climate, driving yet more good jobs out of this state
-draconian gun control efforts

Only someon who is evil, an idiot, or both would support (directly or indirectly) someone with that agenda, just to throw their little libertarian hissy fit...

I notice you are not listed on the Wisconsin locale page. Do you even live in Wisconsin? Or do you just want to screw up another state with your utopian libertarian delusions, and leave those of us who do live here to deal with the consequences?
