The Pacer had a rotary engine? Naaah.
And anyone who thinks it's the ugliest car ever made never saw the original Nissan 280SX. I could stare at that car for hours, marveling at its breathtaking ugliness, at all the hincty little details, at the sheer audacity and fussiness of its nightmarish design. It was a rolling train-wreck, the likes of which we'll never ever see again.
The big Mazda with the power opera window was butt-ugly, too, but that original 'SX wins the prize.

I got the model wrong: it's the 200SX.

The Pacer was designed around a rotary but never sold with one.
The Chevy Monza was also originally designed to have a rotary, but when that didn't pan out, they shoved a V-8 in it. You needed to raise the engine (or cut a hole in the inner fender) in order to change the spark plugs.

Yes the Pacer was was supposed to be be front wheel drive and rotary powered But GM after squandering 125 million from AMC for development of a rotary engine said it was impossible to meet emissions requirements. I guess AMC should have talked to Mazda?
