I could post a couple of verses from Matthew 1 (18 and 25), but I'm sure that someboby has spun those too. I just don't find the concept of Mary and Joseph being actually married, all that hard. In fact, if it weren't a real marriage, then that marriage would have been a lie. Kind of a cruel joke to play on both Joseph and Mary.

We're approaching this from a more jaded, 21st century perspective. Even from that perspective, if I were Joseph I would be a little hesitant to "lay myself down" with a woman who had such intimate relations with the Maker of the Universe.
Now transport that hesitancy back 2000 years, to a people where God was everything. You get the idea.
