After listening for many hours to the media reports and reading lots of theories on these threads, I have come to the conclusion that anything is possible here.

I think that it's likely that this problem is much bigger than we're being told.

That message after the first two days could have very easily been something like:

"I am God's Sword. I will keep killing Americans until the Blind Shiek and his followers are released".

LE is trying to carry on a dialog in the press. POB #s, phone calls, etc. Slowing down the killer as much as possible with false promises etc. Thus the last 5 days. The guy shot last night may well be FBI. This whole thing has reached a very crutial stage.
