This will be far fetched and yes I have my tin foil so here goes;

Suppose the number was to some house in the woods. The police trace the number, no answer. The police go to the house find the nutcase's wife and kids murdered. They let him know they found them and want him to call "home".

OR,

All they find is some cryptic message at a phone booth or house with that number? (going back to the terrorist theory)

Or a cell phone he told them to set up.

I'm trying to figure out why CNN has a reporter walking all over the crime scene?It would seem as though the Police cleared that area very quickly,less than 24 hours.Is every Agency investigating this crime wave incompetent?Can someone call Gill Grissom in Vegas?
