If we encounter any of the opposition in DC next Saturday, be prepared for some of their favorite arguments. For example:

1. We were allied with Hussein in the 1980's against Iran. (Also, that we armed Osama bin Laden to fight the Soviets.)

Yes. We were also allied with Stalin during World War II. What color is the sky on their planet? We are doing the best we can to counter perceived threats to our national interest- sometimes, in this imperfect world that we live in, that means getting in bed with people with whom we may regret such a liason later.

This argument basically acknowledges that Hussein is a brutal, fascist dictator, but attempts to somehow mitigate Hussein's responsibility by bringing up historical alliances that were in place at a time when the potential threats were different- in this case, Iran (having been taken over by anti-American Islamofascists who had taken Americans hostage) and the Soviets were (rightly) considered the threats. Now, the landscape is different.

This particular brand of leftist would like us to completely abdicate our responsibility to take care of any monsters we may have inadvertently- again, given the imperfection of the world- created.

2. That we've killed millions of Iraqi children through our sanctions.

This is pure propaganda, regularly refuted right here at FR. As a matter of fact, I think I pinged you an article on that.

This is the credulous sort of leftist who, like the trio of senators who just recently rubbed shoulders with Hussein, believe we should take this dictator at "face value." It is the ultimate delusion.

Oh, and these protestors won't stay on topic either. Prepare to witness genuflections to cop-killer Mumia, Che, Castro, Stalin etc.
