Israeli Tribes: Once Lost and Now Found?
Searching for the Lost Tribes of Israel in India and Afghanistan
NEWSWEEK
Oct. 21 issue When the veteran Israeli journalist Hillel Halkin began hunting for the Lost Tribes of Israel four years ago, he thought the claim that a community of Indians on the Burmese border was descended from one of the tribes was either a fantasy or a hoax. The fate of Israels 10 lost tribes, which, after being driven from ancient Palestine in the eighth century B.C. by Assyrian conquerors, disappeared into ethnic oblivion, ranks among historys biggest mysteries.

"Says who?" When trying to post this article, when I hit post, a template with a warning automatically stating that it must be excerpted filled my screen. So...orders from headquarters.

I have heard from several sources, that if the ancient population of Israel were to be projected forward to today using normal population growth figures, the actual worldwide Jewish/Israeli/Hebrew population would be around 500 million. Since only about 8-10 million are accounted for in Israel, Europe and the US, there are a lot of folks who could be just about anywhere.

I thought we had been down this road before. In August I posted a WSJ review of this same book and a major thread developed. That thread is here:
Across the Sabbath River.

To kick this thread off, here is the review of the book I posted in the other thread:
This "Lost Tribes of Israel" book review in a respected newspaper demonstrates in a classic manner what happens when a fundamental premise of a search is defective. The rest of the search (and book) simply falls apart.
The faulty premise in this case is that the Lost Tribes of Israel must exhibit Jewish characteristics such as following customs, language, etc. Therefore, if some obscure group is found which exhibits those characteristics the members are probably from the Lost Tribes.
This premise conveniently ignores the reason the Northern Kingdom (Lost Tribes) were sent into Assyrian exile. It was because they had abandoned their Hebrew (they were not Jewish) customs, traditions, and religion and had become heathens. (If these characteristics had been abandoned, why then go around looking for them?) Their exile and subsequent diaspora, plus "not knowing who they were" for a time were key elements of Gods punishment.
Books like this one, and TV shows appear often in an attempt to "find" or to "dilute" or to "prove" something about the Lost Tribes, especially that they do not exist as a "great nation", as promised. To find out the real story of the Lost Tribes of Israel please click on my LostTribe profile below and read the 3-MINUTE HISTORY.

Just for clarification, Newsweek is listed as one of the affiliates of the Washington Post. Even though you sourced this through MSNBC (not on the verboten list), the fact that they credited Newsweek was reason enough to excerpt it.
Carry on.

It is a similar old thread, and the same criticisms as found in Post #12 here apply there.
