Liberals are always accusing conservatives of being racists, but I think it’s the other way around. Liberals are the ones who are obsessed with race. That’s why they’re always calling attention to it and turning it into an issue, even when it has no bearing at all on the subject at hand. When it comes to Secretary Colin Powell, they just can’t seem to see past his skin color. Powell has become a favorite target of liberals and in particular black liberals, solely because of his race.

During a radio interview on Tuesday, Harry Belafonte decided it was his turn to air his views on Secretary Powell. Belafonte, hardly a salt of the earth type himself, fell back on the old house slave, plantation slave routine. In this much-recycled scenario, President Bush is the “master” and Secretary Powell the “house slave.” According to Belafonte, Powell suppresses his own politics, so he can please the master and stay in the house.

This assertion is so incredibly insulting it’s hard to know where to start, but the Uncle Tom implication seems a good place. Why is it that black liberals are always complaining about not being given equal opportunities to succeed in America, but when one does (and you can’t get much higher than the White House), they label him or her a “sell out?” As always with liberals, you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Belafonte also alleged that President Bush appointed Colin Powell as Secretary of State, exclusively for the purpose of making his administration look “diverse.” In other words, Powell’s impressive credentials and laudable career had nothing to do with his appointment as Secretary of State. He’s simply a token black man in the otherwise racist Bush administration. In fact, it’s Belafonte who’s being racist, when he chalks up Powell’s success not to his accomplishments, but to his race.

Apparently Belafonte hadn’t noticed, but Secretary Powell isn’t the only black person in the Bush administration. He seems to have overlooked the fact that Condoleeza Rice is the National Security Advisor. But unlike Powell, who is considered by many to be the “liberal” in the administration, Rice is an unequivocal conservative. As such, she is usually snubbed by black liberals or simply ignored. When the NAACP awarded Rice with an Image Award, the reaction from black liberals was one of resounding silence. A few heaped scorn upon the NAACP for their decision.

You would think that both Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell would be sources of pride for black Americans, not objects of derision. But when it comes to black conservatives, a different set of rules applies. Unless they make their race the focus of their political careers, liberals of all stripes want nothing to do with them.

Not totally.  When the black man was dragged
to death by two whites in Texas, the liberal
press was all over the story.  The LA Times had
102 articles about that crime.  However, the
Wichita murder trial going on right now in which
blacks murdered whites, has received zero
coverage in the Times.  Zero.  Liberals are
obsessed with race when it fits their agenda
and oblivous to it when it does not.

These kinds of examples prove that liberals are basically fascists. For them to acknowledge a person's legitimacy, it is a matter of racial and ideological purity. Conservatives of color are deemed unworthy, and in fact are often treated with more scorn that conservatives of non-color. They become non-persons of color, and their achievments and contributions are either ignored or denigrated.

Yes, liberals are obsessed with race. They see everything through the filter of racial identity. For that reason, I agree that they are racists.

Its sad to say this but today in this country there more black racists than white ones! Some legacy the civil rights movement has created and ain't one they can be proud of. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Harry Belafonte have made them possible and as we can see they have no shame whatsoever in playing the race card against whites AND blacks alike when suits them.

A business owner telling a person that they can't enter the store because they are _________ (fill in the blank with the race, sexual preference, age, religion, democrat, republican etc.) is irrational because it almost always results in a loss of revenue for the business. Even stupider is for the government to threaten the business owner with a gun to give the _________  (race, sexual preference, age, religion, democrat, republican etc.) access to the owner's business.

The smartest thing business owners -- from banks to grocery stores to gas stations to restaurants to phone, gas and electric utility companies -- could do is refuse to sell any goods and services to politicians and bureaucrats.

OK I'm probably going to get flamed for this admission but I consider myself a very open minded liberal. (contradiction I know) But I think that Colin Powell is an amazing man. I really fail to see how others can't see and acknowledge the same. I agree with you in thinking that he is a great and true American.

A real liberal is open-minded. What we call "liberal" in America today is not liberal at all. As David Horowitz noted in a speech a couple of nights ago, "liberals" are totally illiberal on everything but hard drugs and sex.

Americans are obsessed with race! If there is anything that unites the Left and the Right in this country it is this absurd obsession with the MADE IN THE USA mortal sin of "racism". Enough already!

Bottom line:

It has nothing whatsoever to do with race, and everything to do with ideology.

If Mr. Powell and Ms. Rice were Leftists, working for Slick and co., people like Belafonte would be singing their praises from the highest rooftops. To them, a person is only Black if their politics are RED.

Indeed sad, that such bigotry probably keeps MANY intelligent, thoughtful, and dedicated Blacks on the LEFTIST plantation, if only through intimidation.

Oh, well, somehow I don't believe that Mr. Powell or Dr. Rice lose much sleep over the whole thing. It's not as if those most vocally against them have any worthwhile opinions or actual intelligence, anyway. And when was the last time Mr. Belafonte, Mr. Sharpton, or Mr. Jackson EVER did anything in service to their country?

Powell and Rice have written themselves into American history. The others hardly merit a footnote, either in accomplishments or positions.

I think you have captured the essence of the problem very well. It is sad that some so-called "Black Leaders" have a strategy to minimalize great people like Rice and Powell. These "Leaders" not only do a great disservice to those they claim to represent, but to America as a whole.

If Blacks (or any oppressed peoples) are able to succeed on their abilities and merits, then

- Affirmative Action programs are not needed.

- The Help of the White Liberal to resuce the victim is not needed.

- The White Liberals lose their role, and their power in society.

Colin Powell has reacted to Belafonte's comments by brushing it all off with humor. Kudos to Mr. Powell, he has class.
