Jim,
Quite frankly it is because it is easier to 'hate' and mischaracterize the opposition than to rationaly deal with issues. There is a difference between ideology and idealogues... idealogues are the problem. Conflicts in ideology are debates, conflicts between ideologues are wars.
DU does it to republicans and many here do it to the democrats. (Not saying that at times it is not warranted) It is clearly obvious to me, that the democratic party is the party of the marxist, and has sold its soul repeatedly for power and does not put the interests of america ahead of its own lust for power. To a certain extent this exists in the republican party as well, but not to the same degree.
Republicans/Conservative ideologues generally refuse to recognize the role, need or importance that government plays in society. They believe the free market will solve all problems and is for the most part an absolute good and that all government law is tyranny or an absolute bad. Democrats/Liberal ideologues are the exact opposite, they tend to view the free market as an absolute bad, and government as an absolute good.
Neither of these viewpoints is correct however, but don't try to convince an ideologue on either side of that one :) You'll be called a liberal by the righties and a right wing nut by the lefties.
I had always viewed the democratic party as a party who while I disagreed with them, truly were doing what they felt was right for america. Sadly, anymore I do not hold that oppinion of the democratic party, between the obvious ignoring of their constitutional duty and by putting party above what was right during the impeachment both the democrats and republicans lost my faith that either would do what was right when needed. THe republicans got some points for the house, but the senate absolutely betrayed america in the face of nothing more than pole numbers. Then the 2000 election and the dems lust for power over america blazened completely and unabashedly, and now the NJ fiasco, Al Gore, Daschel and the rest of em, with terrorism play politics with our nationals security, putting unions above the safety and security of this nation.
I do believe there are democrats who do love their country and are not socialist/marxists. Of course over 50 current democrats in the House are openly registered socialists. I don't however believe that many of those who truly love this nation hold positions of power.. I dispise their parties balkanization and class warfare tactics, the promotion of diversity over melting pot. Their indefensible capitulation to special interests, and their repeated bald face lying on policy issues. Rank and file dems are generally ok, unfortunately their party is beholden to left over 60s wacko's who never grew up.
