Actually, it is neither. The name was changed on January 20 of this year from Irian Jaya to West Papua.

Y10K is really going to be devistating for computers.

After all we are going to have 5 digits instead of 4 in the date.

Not to worry, tho, I have opened a company to solve ALL the y10K problems. Figure I can actually start the work about the year 8,000, naa, 8,500.

In other recent news:

* Mt. Kilauea has been running hot in Hawaii since July (see photo above),
* there have been several (8 to 10) substantial quakes (4 - 5.8 range) in the Solomon Islands to the east of New Guinea in the last couple of weeks,
* Fiji has been banging away constantly before and after the twin (7.6 and 7.7) quakes of 8/19 with really deep (600 km) quakes, and
* Ruapehu, a volcano in New Zealand, has had an alert on Sept. 16th:

SCIENCE ALERT BULLETIN: RUA-02/02

Ruapehu Volcano update: Volcanic tremor signals

Since September 6 there have been four short-lived episodes of volcanic tremor at Ruapehu.  The duration of these episodes have ranged from 8 to more than 40 hours (see plot below).  Several similar episodes have been recorded this year, namely February 21 (~12hrs duration); May 17 (~24hrs) & 29 (~18hrs); June 17 (~24hrs) and July 15 (~8 hrs).  The earlier episodes all had similar characteristics to the recent activity.

Interesting story.  It appears to be coincidental that the story was posted at the same time as these quakes because it is referring to PNG quakes and refers to Pago, not the above quake in east Indonesia/west New Guinea.  See Pago on the map in #10 above.  The story does show that the whole rim is hot like a kettle about to blow.

>Caldera volcanoes are types of volcano which have a large crater that sits on the magma chamber below, like a sealed lid on a kettle.  When pressure builds up beyond a certain point, they can erupt with an earth-shaking power equal to many nuclear bombs.
