Poll: Doyle holds slight lead in governor's race

Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. -- Democrat Jim Doyle holds a slight lead over Republican Scott McCallum in the race for governor, according to a poll of likely voters released Wednesday.

When asked who they would vote for if the election were held now, 44 percent of respondents said Doyle, 36 percent said McCallum, 6 percent said Libertarian Ed Thompson, 3 percent said Green Party candidate Jim Young and 10 percent were undecided.

The telephone poll of 600 likely Wisconsin voters selected randomly was conducted Oct. 4-7 by Research 2000 of Rockville, Md., and paid by the media partnership We the People/Wisconsin. The margin of error was 4 percentage points.

McCallum campaign manager Darrin Schmitz said the poll results were skewed in favor of Doyle because 37 percent of respondents were Democrats, compared with 33 percent Republicans and 30 percent Independents.

The poll -- the second released this week showing Doyle with a lead -- also shows 40 percent of respondents hold an unfavorable opinion of McCallum. One-third of respondents view McCallum favorably.

Other polls have shown the incumbent governor with unfavorable ratings at or above 40 percent.

Doyle campaign director Bill Christofferson said the new poll confirms the finding of other recent polls showing Doyle with a lead. Christofferson said McCallum's use of negative advertising is driving down his ratings.

The poll also found that 44 percent of respondents hold a favorable opinion of Doyle and 27 percent view him unfavorably.

Poll Ping!

This is the third poll in this race over the past couple of weeks. Though done by three different polling firms, the results are pretty consistent:

9/17-25: Doyle 43, McCallum 35
9/26-29: Doyle 40, McCallum 31
10/4-6: Doyle 44, McCallum 36

If you want on or off my poll ping list, let me know!

Time to replace McCallum with Tommy Thompson.

The voters in Wisconsin deserve to have a choice.
