Apology and retraction
The Daily Evergreen (newspaper of Washington State University) ^ | 10/4/02

Posted on 10/07/2002 3:53:27 PM PDT by GeneD

The Daily Evergreen would like to sincerely apologize for an injustice served to the Filipino-American, Spanish-speaking and Catholic communities on the front page of Thursday's Evergreen.

The story "Filipino-American history recognized" stated that the "Nuestra Senora de Buena Esperanza," the galleon on which the first Filipinos landed at Morro, Bay, Calif., loosely translates to "The Big Ass Spanish Boat." It actually translates to "Our Lady of Good Peace."

Parts of the story, including the translation above, were plagiarized from an inaccurate Web site.

October is Filipino-American History Month. Members of the Filipino-American Student Association of WSU will hold events to celebrate thier history and culture all month. They should be able to celebrate without gross inaccuracies and poor coverage by the Evergreen.

We hope these groups accept our deep regret.

Ordinarily I wouldn't post something like this, but it was linked on Jim Romenesko's page, and, well, it does sound like something worth apologizing for.

BTW, "thier" in the fourth paragraph is as posted.

P. S. Apparently they still didn't get it right, for Romenesko's letters page contains a correction of the correction:

From JOYCE SAENZ HARRIS, Senior Writer, Dallas Morning News:
Subject -- the WSU Daily Evergreen's CX is still wrong! Presumably, nobody on the WSU Daily Evergreen staff has studied even basic Spanish, or the paper's correction would have correctly translated "Nuestra Senora de Buena Esperanza" as "Our Lady of Good Hope" -- not as "Peace" (which would be Paz).

Well, at least it's good training for the majors.

Too funny... got to love the liberal elite in academia fact checking their work prior to publication... what a "big ass" gaff.

Oh, my sides are achin'. This is too funny!

BTW, for what it's worth, the "Daily Evergreen" boasts a circulation of 12,000 copies, yet claims 22,000 readers (including over 4000 University employees). That's a big ass coverage rate to allow that kind of obvious gaffe to slip by the editor(s) unnoticed.

This is great. I like the first translation best, though.

Wrong again, idiots! Esperanza is Spanish for "hope." The name of the boat was "Our Lady of Good Hope." SHeeesh! Even the correction was incorrect!

Evergreen State College is a joke. No grades, just pass/fail (at least it was 10 years ago). It is one of these joints where Womens Studies and Ethnic Studies are the major courses. Long ago, I suggested they change the name from Evergreen to Mostlyblack.
